Nexenta by DDN to Present Breakout Session: Deep Dive into Scalable & Seamless Data Management for Kubernetes with Rook EdgeFS, at KubeCon Shanghai 2019
From Edge to ADAS, Open Source Projects Rook.io and EdgeFS Deliver Unique Storage and Data Management for Multi-Cloud Applications
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—June 20, 2019— NexentaÒ by DDNÒ (Nexenta), the market leader in Software Defined Storage (SDS) for 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), today announced its participation at KubeCon 2019 in Shanghai, to speak on the power of open-source projects, creating multi-homed network configurations, and how Nexenta by DDN is powering China’s largest automobile company to run AI-driven Autonomous and Connected Vehicles. Speaking will be Dmitry Yusupov, Founder and CTO at Nexenta by DDN. The speaking session will be a KubeCon “Deep Dive” talk, and will take place on Tuesday, June 25, from 18:15 - 18:50 China Standard Time (CST).
With the huge increase of adoption of cloud computing, the vast majority of organizations now rely on the cloud architectures, which are often used alongside edge computing in Internet of Things (IoT) applications. As an industry leader, Nexenta by DDN has been invited to speak on this topic and will cover the capabilities and features of NexentaEdgeTM, Scale-Out SDS for cloud-native applications, in the context of cloud computing. NexentaEdge has the ability to use containers orchestration such as Kubernetes to deliver efficient and cost-optimized automation.
During the speaking session, Yusupov will go into detail on NexentaEdge and how it was built using EdgeFS and Rook.io. EdgeFS, an open-core multi-cloud era filesystem for geo-transparent data access, in combination with an open source cloud-native storage orchestrator for Kubernetes originally developed by Upbound called Rook, provides the framework and support for storage solutions to natively integrate with cloud-native environments. Last month, Upbound announced the first release of Rook 1.0 after a long history as an open-source project. Along with a demo on the EdgeFS and Rook project, this session will cover the impact and value of open source.
“As a cloud-native open-source community, we depend on contributors to aid in our success,” said Bassam Tabbara, CEO of Upbound and maintainer on Rook. “In combination with projects like EdgeFS, we can really see what can manifest from collaboration.”
With EdgeFS’s unique global and geographical transparency feature, data from IoT devices can be better analyzed with serverless computing functions executed on any topology, and at any physical location, without the need to worry about data consistency or validity.
“We saw the need for more efficient and resilient hardware and software server stacks needed for IoT cloud and edge computing,” said Yusupov. “To address this gap in the industry, we’ve launched EdgeFS, an open core data layer tailored for Edge and IoT use cases.”
A major example of the project success was revealed just this month, when Nexenta by DDN announced that NexentaEdge, built on EdgeFS and Rook, was chosen to power China’s largest automobile company, SAIC Motor Corporation. The technology now supports next-generation initiatives like SAIC's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Self-Driving Car R&D Platform and Internet Cloud Center – enabling SAIC Motor to dramatically improve efficiency, resiliency and flexibility across multiple areas of business.
With the functionality of EdgeFS, management complexity, performance problems and consistency of access to remote data set is solved. In addition to developing a baseline of products, EdgeFS has its eyes set on Alibaba integration support in an effort to connect China to rest of the world.
KubeCon brings all Cloud Native Computing projects together, joining leading technologists from cloud native communities to further the advancement of cloud native computing. Get more information on the Nexenta by DDN speaking session at KubeCon 2019 here: https://bit.ly/2IpfU4x

SAIC Motor, China’s #1 Auto Manufacturer Deploys Nexenta by DDN
Automotive Giant, #36 in Fortune 500 along with Joint Ventures with VW and GM to Accelerate AI-driven Autonomous and Connected Vehicle Strategy with NexentaEdge Scale-Out Software-Defined Storage Platform; Supporting All Strategic Cloud-Native and Enterprise Apps; on a Global Multi-Cloud Data Management Environment
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—June 11, 2019— Nexenta by DDN (Nexenta), the market leader in Software Defined Storage (SDS) for 5G and Internet of Things (IoT), today announced SAIC Motor Corporation Limited, the largest automobile giant in China and number-36 on Fortune’s Global 500 list, has deployed Nexenta by DDN’s hybrid and multicloud storage software. Chosen to power next-generation initiatives including SAIC's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Self-Driving Car R&D Platform and Internet Cloud Center, the deployment size measures to tens of PB and enables SAIC Motor to dramatically improve efficiency, resiliency and flexibility across multiple areas of business.
“Thanks to Nexenta by DDN, we are able to deploy a solution that allows SAIC Motor to accelerate and modernize our IT innovation,” said Hanshen Gong (龚瀚申), director of data center, SAIC Motors. “The ability to fit our growing business requirements across many areas of business for today and in the future was essential to our decision for selecting NexentaEdge.”
As a world leader in new energy vehicles and Internet-connected cars, SAIC Motors is investing heavily in intelligent driving technology research and industrialization of exploration solutions. To help drive this innovation, SAIC Motors chose Nexenta by DDN’s Scale-Out SDS for cloud-native applications, NexentaEdge. NexentaEdge has the ability to use containers such as Kubernetes, Docker, MongoDB, and others to deliver efficient and cost-optimized automation. Other key features include enterprise-grade data integrity, inline data reduction, unlimited point in time copies, high-performance erasure coding, and a low-cost operating model.
“NexentaEdge customers like SAIC Motors benefit from the flexibility provided to manage storage solutions as a cloud-native application, as well as the ability to use multi-protocol support to access the same data in a geographically transparent multicloud in globally consistent ways,” said Tarkan Maner, CEO, Nexenta by DDN. “We are excited to be working with an innovative organization like SAIC Motors Corporation as they bring to life futuristic tech innovations and introduce them to further enable technologies for AI/ML and multicloud solutions from all three DDN companies – DDN Storage, Nexenta and Tintri.”
Before introducing NexentaEdge, SAIC Motor struggled with disparate storage solutions across their IT infrastructure. With complex and unmanageable systems required to support their comprehensive need for Object (S3), Block and File (NFS), SAIC was never able to place these previous solutions into production. As SAIC Motor’s data center business and infrastructure continued to scale and expand, it became urgent to find a distributed storage system that fit these requirements for its future data and multicloud needs.
One of the areas SAIC Motor uses NexentaEdge for, is as the storage for their AI driving R&D platform, using the S3 protocol with NFS transparent data access. SAIC Motors will utilize NexentaEdge’s S3 service as the storage architecture of the SAIC Hadoop big data platform to replace legacy HDFS storage resources, improving performance as well as stability. This allows cost effective long-term retention and eventually off-site replication thanks to Nexenta by DDN. After the vast amounts of real-time collected data are stored in S3, it is post-processed by the high-speed GPU servers, and the data is read and further analyzed using the NexentaEdge NFS file service. Using hybrid scale-out deployment and leveraging hardware from HPE, SAIC can deliver a flexible solution that meets the required performance, scalability and varied file size handling of their AI environment.
NexentaEdge also supports primary data storage infrastructure for SAIC Motor’s Internet Cloud Center. All data generated from Internet applications are stored on NexentaEdge, including the SAIC Motor Corporation’s big data platform. SAIC Motor will leverage NexentaEdge’s multi-datacenter, globally distributed, data storage namespace with transparent data access across three data centers to perform data backups and application disaster recovery. NexentaEdge is deployed in two of SAIC Motor’s data centers in Shanghai and Nanjing, with plans to expand to its third data center in Zhengzhou later in 2019.

Cisco HyperFlex Further Simplifies and Expands Use Cases for Hyper-Converged Systems
Today's enterprises are finding hyper-converged infrastructures with Cisco's HyperFlex is a great way to modernize IT infrastructures, by making it more efficient, easier to deploy and keep performance high to support use cases including Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and Remote Office/ Branch Office (ROBO). While hyper-converged architectures are proven to streamline the building and management of new cloud data centers, essential enterprise workloads require file storage protocols like NFS and SMB/CIFS. The answer of the past is legacy monolithic storage filers, which destroy the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and philosophy of going hyper-converged.
Because NexentaStor VSA, full-featured SDS for enterprise applications, can be deployed virtually, customers can easily leverage this software for their Cisco HyperFlex environment. There is no need to buy additional hardware, but instead, they can leverage their existing Cisco HyperFlex hardware saving cost, rack space, and added complexity.
“Nexenta’s software adds file services capability to Cisco HyperFlex which becomes an all-inclusive, full-featured solution for today’s modern data center. We are excited to partner with Nexenta to empower our customers to further simplify and lower their TCO for use cases like VDI,” said Manish Agarwal, Director of Product Management, Cisco.
Software-Based Enterprise-Class File Services to Hyper-Converged Systems
Nexenta’s award-winning fifth-generation storage software, NexentaStor VSA, allows organizations to easily add file services to your Cisco HyperFlex. With added software-based NAS capabilities, customers can leverage an extremely efficient fit-for-purpose storage solution including all of the capabilities expected from an enterprise-class solution including, inline data reduction, snapshots, data integrity, security, and domain control. The management of combined Cisco and Nexenta stack is all done through the familiar VMware vCenter interface.
