Nexenta Delivers the First Scale-Out Software-Defined Storage Platform for Container-Converged Infrastructures
NexentaEdge DevOps Edition is now available "FREE" for download from Docker hub, providing DevOps teams enterprise grade scale-out storage optimized to support and protect containerized applications and their data
SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Dec. 6, 2016 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced a DevOps Edition of its award-winning scale-out block, file and object storage platform, NexentaEdge. NexentaEdge DevOps Edition is a high performance storage solution tailored for simply scalable on-premise container-converged infrastructure.
“The need for scalable and persistent storage for container environments has grown rapidly in the past year,” said Henry Baltazar, Research Director of Storage, 451 Research. “The NexentaEdge DevOps Edition aims to provide early adopters with a free multiprotocol storage platform with enterprise features such as error correction, cluster wide inline deduplication, snapshots and load balancing which early adopters can use to develop next generation applications with the agility and flexibility of containers.”
The rapid containerization of applications old and new via Docker and Kubernetes is powering the need for purpose-built on-premise infrastructure to efficiently run and support them. Similar to how hyper-converged platforms efficiently combine storage, network and compute to provide a simply scalable foundation for hypervisors and virtual machines, Nexenta has identified the need for container-converged infrastructure, optimized to support and protect containerized applications and their data on scale-out clusters of industry standard servers.
The NexentaEdge DevOps Edition is purpose-built to deliver:

- High-performance, multi-protocol storage services for container images and the applications they run, including block, file and object protocols
- Fully integrated with standard container management frameworks like Docker Swarm, Docker Unified Control Plane, and Kubernetes
- Container deployment - runs as containers and managed as containers through standard tools
NexentaEdge DevOps Edition nodes are deployed as containers on physical or virtual hosts, pooling all their storage capacity and presenting it as native block devices, NFS shares, or S3 objects to containerized applications running on the same servers. All storage services are managed through standard Docker tools, for greater agility and scalability. NexentaEdge DevOps Edition incorporates Docker Volume plug-in to automatically provision storage for new applications.
NexentaEdge DevOps Edition provides the latest advanced storage features of NexentaEdge to containerized applications running on the same hosts. Its patented Cloud Copy on Write data layer provides self-healing error corrections, automatic load balancing, unlimited space optimized volume, file and object snapshots, as well as inline cluster wide deduplication and compression for ultimate storage efficiency.
Container-converged infrastructure powered by NexentaEdge DevOps Edition is ideal to simply deploy, run and protect stateful containerized applications such as databases like MySQL, MongoDB, or scale-out analytics tools like Hadoop and Cassandra.
“The release of NexentaEdge DevOps Edition is an important milestone, enabling the deployment of container-converged solutions in minutes using standard DevOps tools,” said Dmitry Yusupov, Co-Founder at Nexenta. "NexentaEdge DevOps Edition combines powerful enterprise class storage functionality with application container frameworks as the first true container-converged software defined solution. We’re excited to make this available free charge to DevOps teams looking to run stateful containers on any scale-out cluster of x86 servers.”

Data centers traditionally based on proprietary frame-based array hardware are transitioning to digital and cloud infrastructures offering high levels of agility and performance. All-flash array (AFA) storage solutions, considered integral to digital and cloud infrastructures, are still one of the highest growth sub-segments of the enterprise storage market. According to IDC, worldwide sales of AFAs were $2.9B in 2015, and the market is expected to grow at a 21.4 percent CAGR through 2020 to reach $7.7B in revenue*.
“Revenue growth in the AFA space has continued to outperform expectations as customers are rapidly transitioning from legacy to flash-optimized storage architectures,” said Eric Burgener, research director for Storage. “Currently, 38% of organizations are already testing or using AFAs, with another 26% evaluating them. 50% of organizations let flash deployment be driven on a case-by-case basis, but an additional 27% are already committed to an “all flash for primary storage” strategy. IDC expects that by 2020, AFAs will drive more than 70% of all primary storage spend.”
“Micron flash storage is transforming how data is accessed, stored and managed – and, in the process, is solving some of the world’s most vexing compute challenges,” said Darren Thomas, VP and GM Storage Business Unit at Micron. “From virtualized computing to cloud-based storage environments, Micron Accelerated Solutions transform today’s data centers and Nexenta and Supermicro are important partners that unlock new value for our customers.”
