Nexenta Co-Founder and CTO to Share Best Practices on How to Optimize Scalability and Performance at Web Scale via Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage at SNIA’s Storage Developer Conference

Santa Clara, Calif.—Sept. 17, 2015—Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that Alex Aizman, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, will speak at SNIA’s Storage Developer Conference (SDC)

Caitlin Bestler, Nexenta’s Senior Director of Architecture, and Aizman co-authored the presentation titled “Beyond Consistent Hashing and TCP: Vastly Scalable Load Balanced Storage Clustering”, which Aizman will share with the SDC attendees on Sept. 21.  The presentation discusses how to optimize scalability and clustering in your storage environment. Successive generations of storage solutions have increased decentralization. Early NAS systems made all the decisions on a single server, down to sector assignment. Federated NAS enabled dynamic distribution of the namespace across multiple storage serves. The first Object Clusters delegated CRUD-based management of both object metadata and data to OSDs.

Current generation of Object Clusters uses Consistent Hashing to eliminate the need for central metadata. However, Consistent Hashing and its derivatives, combined with the prevalent use of TCP/IP in storage clusters results in performance hot spots and bottlenecks, diminished scale-out capability and dis-balances in resource utilization.

These shortcomings will be demonstrated with a simulation of a large storage cluster. An alternative next generation strategy that simultaneously optimizes available IOPS "budget" of the back-end storage, storage capacity, and network utilization will be explained. Practically unlimited load-balanced scale-out capability using Layer 5 (Replicast) protocol for Multicast Replication within the cluster will be presented.

“I’m looking forward to conversing with fellow storage industry leaders and demonstrating how CCOW (Cloud Copy-on-Write) and Replicast can provide infinite scale-out,” said Aizman. “The objective is to help companies achieve high performance and scalability by creating more affordable clusters.”

SNIA is a non-profit organization advancing IT technologies, standards, and education programs for all IT professionals.
