Nexenta and San Jose State University Partner to Develop and Deliver Research and Workforce for the Contextual Intelligence Era
Advanced Classes Focusing on Open Source-, Big Data-, and Standard/Commodity Hardware-driven Software-Defined Data Centers and Cloud Computing; Featuring Hands-on Labs, Instructors from Local Tech Firms
SANTA CLARA, Calif.— January 19, 2016 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), and the Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering at San Jose State University (SJSU), a U.S. News and World Reports top-ranked public engineering program, today announced they have jointly developed an advanced computing class, to address the needs of organizations seeking expertise in big data, cloud computing and software-defined data centers (SDDCs).
The course for exceptional undergrad and grad students, entitled “CmpE 297 Special Topic in Software-Defined Storage”, will be offered for the first time in Fall Semester 2016. Putting theory into practice to prepare students for the world outside of the classroom, the class will combine practical hands-on labs with guest instruction from technical experts currently employed at Silicon Valley-based companies SanDisk (SNDK (NASDAQ), Milpitas, Calif.) and Supermicro (SMCI (NASDAQ), San Jose, Calif.). Registration for Fall Semester classes opens May 31.
Engineering-related programs comprise the most popular field of study at SJSU, and the College of Engineering, with its 7,300-plus undergraduate and graduate students, is the largest of the university’s eight colleges. As of fall 2015, SJSU’s 14 engineering disciplines accounted for roughly 17 percent of all undergraduate majors and over 48 percent of all graduate students.
“As the largest contributor to Silicon Valley’s high-tech workforce, we’re constantly seeking to collaborate with local tech companies like Nexenta, to ensure our students gain the practical experience they need to be successful after they leave San Jose State,” said Andrew Hsu, Ph.D., Don Beall Dean, College of Engineering, SJSU. “It’s undeniable that cloud computing, software-defined everything and big data have ushered in a totally new era in the ways we collect, store and use data, creating a demand for technologists with this kind of specialized knowledge. By inviting subject matter experts to teach our students, we’re equipping them with the skill set prized by employers, and also doing our part to stem a critical shortage in America’s job market.”
SJSU joins Nexenta’s Higher Education Program, which is dedicated to partnerships with universities to develop technical curricula to prepare STEM students for the workforce. By building on the foundational software engineering and computer science curricula, and adding advanced courses with both academic value and substantial "real world" applicability, Nexenta and partner universities are delivering coveted knowledge to graduates.
“We’re committing resources to prepare tomorrow’s workforce with the highly valued skills that might otherwise be years in the making,” said Eric Ray, Director of Platform Development at Nexenta, who is spearheading the Higher Ed program. “The best way we know to solve the chronic tech worker shortage is to encourage more collaborative efforts between industry and the universities developing the engineers and computer scientists of the future.”
Nexenta is recruiting universities and higher education institutions to participate in the program. Interested faculty or administrative staff should contact Jill Orhun, Nexenta’s Chief of Staff and head of strategic educational programs.

Nexenta Sponsors Downtown Streets Team and City of San Jose Gateway Project to Help Homeless
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Dec. 16, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that they are sponsoring the Gateway Beautification Project supported by San Jose Mayor, Sam Liccardo and Downtown Streets Team, a non-profit organization working to end homelessness through the restoration and rebuilding of lives. The Gateway Project, aims to not only help beautify and take care of the San Jose environment, but also to end homelessness, one gateway at a time.
Nexenta is sponsoring a gateway sign near the 82/Alameda 880 highway interchange, which will be marked in bright blue and easily spotted at the nearby on-ramps. This sponsorship is another example of Nexenta’s ongoing commitment to giving back to their local community. This year alone, in addition to backing the Gateways Project, Nexenta partnered with the Colorado Technology Foundation to help bridge companies to STEM education, technology and workforce programs in Colorado. The company also expanded its partnership with the Silicon Valley Education Foundation (SVEF), which included The 11th Annual Pioneers & Purpose Gala where Nexenta was a featured host. The November event raised $1.3 million to support K-12 education in California.
“Nexenta is honored to back the incredible work that Downtown Streets Team and Mayor Liccardo are doing with the Gateway Project,” said Tarkan Maner, Chairman and CEO of Nexenta. “Giving back to our local community by creating opportunities of empowerment and support is of huge importance to us and our Gateway sign is an ongoing reminder of our dedication in this regard.”
While the Gateway Project aims to beautify the local community, it’s also about sharing social responsibility in the fight to end homelessness. Downtown Streets Team strives to build partnerships with cities to beautify neighborhoods, creeks and downtown streets as well as with the homeless men and women who volunteer on these projects. Nexenta joins Supermicro, Ernst & Young LLP, Wells Fargo and TiVo, amongst others in support of the project.

Nexenta to Bring Open Source-Driven Software-Defined Storage Focus to the Software-Defined Infrastructure Summit
SANTA CLARA, Calif – December 1, 2015 – Nexenta (@Nexenta) the global leader in Open Source-Driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) solutions, today announced that it will be speaking at the Software-Defined Infrastructure Summit, Santa Clara. Held at the Santa Clara Convention Center, California (December 1-3), the summit will focus on infrastructure for Big Data and cloud computing and will bring together the industry leading experts and professionals who will showcase the latest innovation.
As the world continues to become more data-driven due to Big Data and cloud computing, the traditional infrastructure relied upon to support such demanding processes has been a constraint. Unable to provide the necessary scalability and consistent performance, the industry needs data center technology to evolve in order to support today’s mass data activities. Software-Defined technology is the next evolutionary step and summit attendees will discover first-hand how Nexenta, with its award winning OpenSDS solutions, is leading the way.
During the summit, Nexenta will be participating and leading the following panel discussions and seminars.
Title: Future of Software-Defined Storage
When: Tuesday, December 1, 16:00 – 17:00 PST
Moderator: Ashish Nadkarni, Research Director, IDC
Panellists: Rick Braddy, CEO, SoftNAS
Karthik Balachandran, Solutions Sales, CloudVelox
Vikram Gupta, Head/Product Management, Cloudian
Clod Barrera, Distinguished Engineer/Chief Technical Strategist, IBM
Anjaneya (Reddy) Chagam, Chief SDS Architect, Intel
Thomas Cornely, Chief Product Officer, Nexenta
Abstract: The panel will discuss what the future has in store for SDS, including which
technologies will rise to prominence in 2016 and the challenges they expect to face.
Title: Creating an Innovation Machine with SDI
When: Thursday, December 3, 11:30 – 12:00 PST
Speaker: Sam Greenblatt, Nexenta Advisory Board, Technologist in Residence, Nano Global
Abstract: An obvious problem with today’s data center infrastructures is that change is both
difficult and dangerous. It is difficult because it generally involves many low-level,
highly detailed structures and depends on both hardware and software. It is
dangerous because legacy applications on which enterprises rely for their ordinary
daily activities may not run in the new infrastructure – and who knows exactly why?
SDI offers a much better basis for change. It not only makes change simpler, but it
can also leave the original architecture readily available in case of problems. All you
do is restore the original parameters in software or, even better, keep a copy of that
architecture in “virtual” form. So you end up with an innovation machine – you can
innovate all you want in software while keeping the original base architecture for use
as needed or when changes have unexpected side effects.
Title: Vision for the Software-Defined Data Center
When: Thursday, December 3, 12:00 – 12:30 PST
Speaker: Tarkan Maner, Chairman & CEO, Nexenta
Abstract: Join Tarkan Maner as he discusses the future for the software-defined data center,
software-defined storage, and software-defined infrastructure. Everything must
change in the era of Big Data, cloud computing, and the storage explosion – and
software-defined everything is clearly the solution.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—Nov. 18, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that TMC, a global, integrated media company, has named both NexentaStor and NexentaEdge with vCloud Air integration as 2015 Cloud Computing Storage Excellence Award winners presented by TMC’s Cloud Computing Magazine.
The Cloud Storage Excellence Award recognizes companies that have introduced or improved cloud storage solutions.
“We are grateful to once again to be recognized by TMC for our continuous dedication to providing organizations with software-defined-storage solutions through virtualization in the cloud,” said Michael Letschin, Field Chief Technology Officer, Nexenta. “NexentaStor and NexentaEdge with vCloud Air integration leverages both Nexenta and VMware’s leading technology, providing customers with the scalability and accessibility of pure hybrid cloud deployments at a low cost.”
NexentaStor and NexentaEdge can now seamlessly integrate with the latest vCloud Suite, enabling deployments on vCloud ® Air™ to provide true hybrid cloud storage solutions. Current VMware and Nexenta customers can transition existing storage environments to the cloud, creating a virtualized infrastructure and increasing scalability and growth, without purchasing additional hardware. New customers with growing data volumes or backup and recovery needs can avoid purchasing expensive hardware and will benefit from deployment speeds of minutes and hours, versus adding new servers. Additionally, Nexenta delivers the first object storage integration available on vCloud via NexentaEdge. With the introduction of this integration, customers can now deploy their entire storage environments within the cloud, paving the way to a completely virtualized and software-defined data center.
“Congratulations to Nexenta for its ability to show maturity and expansion of the cloud storage market through innovation and product quality,” said Rich Tehrani, CEO, TMC. “We are pleased to present NexentaStor and NexentaEdge with vCloud Air Integration with a Cloud Storage Excellence Award for its commitment to advancing cloud storage solutions.”
