Schuberg Philis Picks Nexenta for Mission Critical Cloud Service

Amsterdam — 18 December 2012 — Nexenta® Systems, the leader in Software-defined Storage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that Schuberg Philis, a provider of mission critical outsourcing services, has selected a 1.1PB Nexentastor solution to underpin part of its cloud service.

Based in Schiphol and with revenues of more than €48.6 million, Schuberg Philis provides its customer with 100% uptime for mission critical applications that support large organisations’ IT operations. Schuberg Philis takes full end-to-end responsibility for its customers’ applications providing 100% availability.

Traditionally Schuberg Philis used customer-dedicated IT infrastructure as a foundation for these mission critical application landscapes. In early 2011 Schuberg Philis decided to look at creating an alternative mission critical service for its customers and prospects, based on cloud technology. With a reputation for superior customer service and performance, it needed a storage solution to underpin its new cloud service. One that could handle the performance requirements and could scale cost effectively.

After researching the market Schuberg Philis opted for a Nexenta solution. After rigorous testing they decided on several NexentaStor HA clusters which they built on 10 HP DL380s, 24 DataON shelves and 16 STEC devices combined with 552 Toshiba Nearline SAS Disks, Schuberg Philis explains: “Nexenta’s software, which is based on the open source ZFS file system, fitted perfectly into our cloud design. Not only is it a robust platform with data protection features that all of our technical team love using, but it also offers very high performance that that will support our customers’ needs whilst still giving us the ability to easily scale up and out when needed.”

Schuberg Philis has installed multiple NexentaStor HA clusters, thereby providing the company with 1.1PB of raw capacity. In addition to unlimited snapshots, other important features include hybrid storage pooling, deduplication, thin provisioning and the ability to find, detect and recover silent data corruption through NexentaStor’s airtight end-to-end data integrity.

Funs Kessen, Mission Critical Engineer at Schuberg Philis concludes: “With its interoperability and scalability, Nexenta was an important component for our cloud platform. We expect a lot of our customers to take up the opportunity, and if this leads to exploding data growth rates, Nexenta is our secret weapon."

Evan Powell, CEO of Nexenta says: “Innovative storage technologies have become vital for cloud-based services, which need to scale without the worry of escalating costs. As an alternative to traditional legacy storage systems from big vendors, Nexenta helps service providers, like Schuberg Philis, meet its client needs effectively while remaining competitive in the current climate.”
