Leading Energy Utility Runs on Nexenta Open Source-Driven Software-Defined Storage Solutions
Walton EMC Cuts Data Center Costs without Sacrificing Performance for Highest Ratings in Customer Service and Satisfaction in the Industry
SANTA CLARA, Calif., – February 26, 2015 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, today announced that Georgia-based Walton Electric Membership Corporation, one of the nation’s largest electric cooperatives, uses NexentaStor, Nexenta’s flagship OpenSDS platform, in conjunction with VMware to save on storage and maintenance costs. Walton Electric one of the largest of almost 1,000 electric cooperatives in the country and supplies energy to more than 122,000 residential, business and industrial accounts in 10 northeast George counties. The company is known for reliable energy and electric services, delivered efficiently, with extraordinary customer care.
With only six people in the IT group out of 370 employees, Andy Hill, Director of Information Services at Walton EMC, doesn’t have a lot of extra time or resources to be worried about storage. His number one concern is to ensure that they are using their technology budget wisely. Hill and his team turned to Software-Defined Storage by Nexenta and industry-standard storage hardware from Nexsan to replace aging physical storage arrays. The result has been stellar performance, less maintenance and lower TCO.
“I’m interested in systems that require little management,” said Hill. “The Nexenta Software-Defined Storage system falls into that basket. Some IT systems are promised that way, but in the end they aren’t. For us using Nexenta, it’s literally been that way all along.”
“Stories like Walton EMC are commonplace with customers who use Nexenta. Organizations don’t need to dedicate staff resources to storage nor worry about performance or scalability,” said Craig Cagle, VP, GM of Americas at Nexenta. “The fact that Walton’s customers are stakeholders in the company makes Software-Defined Storage even more compelling as Hill and his team have a keen eye on the bottom line are making an investment in the future of their IT infrastructure.”

Leading University Embraces Cloud Computing With Nexenta Software-Defined Storage
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced the deployment and case study for Northern Arizona University.
“We kept adding more storage at more cost where the controllers were already having a hard time keeping up, but it felt more like triage than a real solution. We needed to change the way we thought about storage in order to break out of this cycle.”
With a main campus in Flagstaff, NAU accommodates more than 20,000 students, with an additional 7,000 students enrolled in NAU’s 36 extended campuses throughout the state of Arizona. Originally founded in 1899, NAU offers 87 bachelor degree programs, 48 master’s degree programs and 10 doctoral degree programs, along with 38 undergraduate and 26 graduate certificates.
Duane Booher, Software Systems Engineer Senior, and Tobias Kreidl, Academic Team Lead are part of NAU's centralized Information Technology Services (ITS) Department. As NAU’s academic computing virtualization needs grew, the strain on storage capacity began to manifest itself campus-wide in a variety of ways; one issue was slow user response times due to high I/O latency. The NAU ITS team had already exhausted various tuning options, with little improvement. They also experienced high IOPS during usage spikes that saturated the capabilities of the existing storage array. Furthermore, disk storage capacity was running out; hence the desire to look for a solution that also supported thin provisioning. NexentaStor provided that means, especially when NAU became convinced via testing that NFS performance could equal that of iSCSI in their environment.
“It was a vicious cycle,” according to Booher. “We kept adding more storage at more cost where the controllers were already having a hard time keeping up, but it felt more like triage than a real solution. We needed to change the way we thought about storage in order to break out of this cycle.”
Beginning with performance, NAU students and staff no longer have to worry about unacceptably slow computers. Thin clients, thick clients and VMs now have faster performance because of the new storage infrastructure.
According to NAU’s Kreidl: “We now have better than a 93% cache read rate, we very rarely see latency above 10 milliseconds - a speed that’s practically unprecedented here, and this type of performance is consistent even as usage spikes significantly throughout the academic calendar. Our team used to sweat out the traffic spikes around class registration, but that issue is now behind us.”
“We are very excited to be able to work with Northern Arizona University and help them transition from a legacy storage implementation to an SDS solution that provides them with better performance for students, faculty and school administrators,” according to Tarkan Maner, Chairman and CEO at Nexenta. “The scalability of their technology infrastructure is now far more flexible and modular, with the ability to dynamically allocate and re-allocate assets without worrying about performance or storage implications.”
Please refer to the Northern Arizona University Case Study for more implementation details.

Nobel Prize-Winning Renowned European University Deploys Nexenta Software Defined Storage to Support Massive Private Cloud Expansion
Ludwig Maximilian University in Germany Boosts Storage Performance and Capacity Management for 50,000 Students on Commodity Hardware
Santa Clara, CA and Munich, Germany - February 17, 2015 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, today announced it was chosen by the Faculty of Physics at Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU), one of Europe’s premier academic and research institutions, to support its IT environment.
LMU is the second largest university in Germany with over 50,000 students. It attracts inspired scholars and talented students from all over the world and is a global powerhouse for physics research and education, with over 34 Nobel laureates associated with it.
With eight different sites in and around Munich, the university faced a daily battle to provide fast and efficient service to its students and staff. Leveraging a central data center was not possible due to the demand for low latency. Additionally, each site has different requirements, making it impossible to settle on a single, central solution. The university’s diverse IT environments were previously supported by countless storage solutions from a variety of hardware vendors, meaning that capacity ran high and performance often suffered. LMU required a reliable IT system that was flexible, could handle the large workloads and would enable the university to continue to expand.
Searching for a solution, Klaus Steinberger, Head of IT, attended a seminar on SDS by Nexenta. He explained: “We decided straight away to test the NexentaStor solution and we liked what we saw. It was incredibly powerful, self healing and very flexible.”
After installing one NexentaStor system in 2012, the IT team now has over seven systems with a combined capacity of 380TB. The solution has allowed the faculty to enjoy the high availability demanded, with added flexibility. Using SDS avoids vendor lock-in, so the department is not tied to any single, expensive solution. The flexibility to use standard hardware has prompted the university to look at implementing SDS across its other departments, with the Faculty of Mathematics, Information Technology and Statistics already installing their first NexentaStor systems.
Nexenta’s partner in Munich, BASIS GmbH, delivered and integrated the solutions at the faculty. Stefan Fisher, CEO at BASIS said: “For the faculty, NexentaStor is simply the best solution. The flexibility means it can use one system for different purposes and doesn’t have to work with different management platforms. Price was not the deciding factor as the enormous performance of the systems was convincing enough, but saving some budget was the icing on the cake.”
Mark Jordan, VP, GM, EMEA, Nexenta said: “LMU is a leading institution and with services to over 50,000 students, it is essential the department could handle the large workloads. It is great to see that NexentaStor helped achieve this and provided extra flexibility, and lower total cost. LMU can now rest assured it is not tied into any vendor lock in and can choose any standard hardware upgrade when needed, which is ideal for such a fast paced and diverse university.”

Leading Transportation Company Deploys Nexenta Software-Defined Storage for the Private Cloud
Budd Van Lines Improves Storage Performance by Nearly 300%; Improves Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery on Commodity Hardware
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – February 12, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced the deployment and case study for Budd Van Lines. Headquartered in Somerset, New Jersey, Budd Van Lines is a nationwide independent household goods carrier specializing in relocating corporate executives. Budd Van Lines is an independent nationwide carrier. Each and every relocation provides a highly personalized, superior moving experience.
Budd Van Lines experienced a dramatic surge in data storage demand as a result of the company’s switch to 1080p security cameras. While company growth is a net positive, the ongoing accumulation of both corporate data and video surveillance was overwhelming the company’s data storage infrastructure. More information was being captured and retained for longer periods of time. The cameras helped to improve freight security and employee safety, but the existing SAN was incapable of functioning at this level without a complete upgrade and the NAS was similarly overburdened.
Nexenta’s flagship storage solution for unified block and file, NexentaStor, is now running Tier 1 storage for Budd, including powering more than 100 virtual machines. NexentaStor also is assuring that the 6TBs of production data is replicated every fifteen minutes.
“I’ve always wanted this level of replication but couldn’t justify the cost," according to Doug Soltesz, CIO of Budd Van Lines. "Where some Software-Defined Storage solutions don’t even offer replication, Nexenta not only offers it, but we have an RPO (Recovery Point Objective) of 15 minutes in place, which is pretty amazing considering it is running on commodity hardware. We have three years of snapshots ready to go at any time.”
Added Soltesz: “The amount of money I’ve saved in support alone has paid for the Nexenta system. If we had gone with NetApp or EMC we would be paying at least five times as much. And not only was the price of the Nexenta implementation less than other SDS companies, the performance is flat-out better.”
Because Nexenta’s solution abstracts the storage software layer from the underlying hardware, customers can use any commodity hardware. This reduces storage infrastructure costs and also frees the customer from vendor lock-in.
"We are delighted to be in a position to help Budd Van Lines with their Software-Defined Storage solution," according to Tarkan Maner, Chairman and CEO at Nexenta. "We are honored that our combination of high availability, ZFS, certification and support helped make a difference at Budd Van Lines."
Please refer to the Budd Van Lines Case Study for more implementation details.

Nexenta and Storage Switzerland Present the “How Snapshots Can Be Backups” Webinar
Participants Will Learn How to Architect Primary Storage to Ensure Snapshots Meet Data Protection Requirements with Software-Defined Storage
Santa Clara, Calif.—February 12, 2015—Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced it will be hosting a complimentary webinar, “How Snapshots Can Be Backups,” in partnership with Storage Switzerland, an analyst firm focused on the storage, virtualization and cloud marketplaces. Snapshots have been a key feature of primary storage infrastructures that IT professionals have relied on for years, but storage systems have traditionally only been able to support a limited number of active snapshots and these snapshots, being pointers and not actual data, are susceptible to a primary storage system failure. As a result, most IT professionals use snapshots sparingly for protecting data.
This webinar will enable an actionable strategy to create a primary storage infrastructure that can replace much of the data protection process, while significantly improving your ability to meet recovery point and recovery time objectives. Additionally, attendees will learn about the types of snapshot technologies, the weaknesses of snapshots and the benefits of self-protecting primary storage architecture.

Nexenta and VMware End User Computing Collaborate to Accelerate VDI Adoption
Leader in Software-Defined Storage Provides Cost-effective Storage Solutions Validated Across VMware’s Horizon VDI and Hyper-converged Offerings
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – February 3, 2015 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), in collaboration with VMware, today announced support and validation of NexentaConnect across all VMware Horizon® deployment scenarios.
IT organizations deploying desktop and application virtualization using VMware Horizon can achieve optimal performance, simplification of deployment and lower cost of their infrastructure with Nexenta. NexentaConnect solutions provide:
- File services (NFS & SMB) to all Virtual SAN hosted virtual machines
- Folder and volume level snapshots and replication
- I/O acceleration
- Increased density
- Seamless and validated integration with VMware Horizon, vSphere® and VMware Virtual SAN™
- Data compression and deduplication
NexentaConnect solutions support Horizon across the following scenarios:
- Standalone software deployment
- Converged infrastructure
- On top of VMware Virtual SAN
- As part of EVO: RAIL™ hyper-converged platforms
The NexentaConnect, VMware EVO: RAIL, and VMware Horizon hyper-converged solution can now provide users day one access to a full VDI solution from the desktops through the user profiles and data without the need for any additional hardware. This validated architecture continues the joint approach at a performant and cost effective software-defined VDI strategy between VMware and Nexenta.
"NexentaConnect for VMware Horizon opens up new opportunities for infrastructures looking to increase flexibility, scalability and cost-effectiveness with software-defined, hyper-converged solutions,” said Eric Burgener, research director at IDC. “By deploying solutions like the integrated Nexenta and VMware solution, organizations can achieve high performance, provide file services (NFS & SMB) to all VSAN hosted virtual machines and take advantage of additional software-defined storage options for virtual desktop environments. These types of solutions allow organizations to be more agile, simplifying storage deployment and management so they can focus on their desktop virtualization and business goals.”
“Storage deployment, configuration and management continue to get in the way of customers’ goals to achieve the benefits of virtual workspaces. Our work with Nexenta allows us to leverage software-defined storage as the enabler for a cost effective and capable Horizon implementation,” said Sumit Dhawan, SVP and GM, Desktop Products, End-User Computing, VMware.
Thomas Cornely, Chief Product Officer at Nexenta said, “We continue to educate and share our latest solutions in collaboration with VMware to our partners and customers, and VMware PEX is a great platform for us to do so. OpenSDx is rapidly gaining momentum and will be the focus at this event as we demo our latest solutions with VMware.”
Supporting Quotes
“The addition of Nexenta Stor and server message block capabilities to our VMware’s EVO: RAIL platform gives Dell’s customers unprecedented scale and ease of management,” said Jim Ganthier, vice president and general manager of Dell Engineered Solutions. “We are excited about the customer results we can deliver via our close collaboration with Nexenta on both Dell Engineered Solutions for VMware EVO: RAIL, and broadly across our mutual customers’ VMware environments.”
“The joint NexentaConnect, VMware EVO: RAIL and VMware Horizon hyper-converged solution eliminates the need for additional hardware, thereby helping enterprises manage storage growth – one of IT’s biggest challenges,” said Richard Aitink, Account Manager at Storius. “We’re looking forward to working with Nexenta and VMware to bring this integrated solution to enterprises that are looking for an innovative way to optimize performance, lower their infrastructure costs and easily increase access to virtual desktops.”
