Global Leader in Media Asset Management Runs its Hybrid Cloud on Nexenta Open Software-Defined Storage
Picturemaxx Serves Hundreds of Media Agencies with More Than a Billion Media Files in Production Storage
Picturemaxx AG now benefits from high availability, low latency and 100 percent uptime
SANTA CLARA, CA & Munich, Germany – April 28, 2015 -- Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) today announced that Picturemaxx AG, a certified technology company and leader in Media Asset Management (MAM), supports its media management solutions with NexentaStor. Picturemaxx solutions are used to acquire, distribute, publish and market digital content. Nexenta’s flagship OpenSDS platform delivered a new, higher performance storage system, which guarantees 100% uptime, better scalability and budget benefits.
Picturemaxx has been the market leader for more than 30 years. The company’s high-end search engine my-picturemaxx aggregates the portfolios of several hundred photo agencies from all around the world and provides more than one billion saved media for simultaneous research.
At peak times, events like the Olympics or fashion week can trigger an upload of thousands of high resolution images. These images all need to be processed, scaled and rendered using Picturemaxx’ media database and infrastructure. The existing Linux-based Direct Attached Storage (DAS) was struggling to cope and during times of high media usage, performance and capacity issues became a concern. With its reputation on the line, the company needed a reliable storage system that could provide high availability and cope with the large workloads.
Looking to overcome its challenges, Picturemaxx turned to long-time partner Orange Server Concept (former Exus Technologies). Oliver Flathmann, Chief Production Officer at Orange explained: “Picturemaxx has very specific needs with an out of this world turnover of data on a daily basis and a unique system. Reaching high availability was of major importance along with high performance, high flexibility and advanced storage features like unlimited snapshots. There was only one sustainable solution: Nexenta.”
The installation was divided into several phases to implement a total of six storage clusters. The first three clusters based on HDDs were installed as primary storage for all media uploads and downloads. The next three clusters, based on SSD, were then installed to serve as a host for Picturemaxx’ business intelligence storage applications. The entire storage system now holds up to one petabyte in storage.
With NexentaStor, Picturemaxx’ IT infrastructure now has the flexibility and freedom to follow any upgrade path. NexentaStor provides massively scalable storage environments with a virtually unlimited number of snapshots, free versioning and high granularity of data protection.
By adopting Nexenta, Picturemaxx was able to implement the right solution for its needs with high performance, low latency, high availability and no vendor lock in. Christian Marntiz, Chief Information Officer at Picturemaxx, explained: “Going with one of the big vendors was not the right choice for us. Their business model does not serve us well as we need to be able to plan exactly how much we can spend. A very positive factor is also Nexenta’s support. We have found a partner that understands how unique our system is and it can offer us more flexible solutions than other vendors with their fixed product roadmaps.”
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta, commented: “The NexentaStor solution has helped to achieve the high availability and performance that the IT team at Picturemaxx required. The problems Picturemaxx faced are very common and it is important for all kinds of businesses to find a solution that will grow with them. We are pleased to have helped solve Picturemaxx’ IT challenges.”

- Over 46,000 users and community members.
- Over 10,000 questions and comments.
“As a NexentaStor Community Edition (CE) user for over 4 years now, I continually see the benefit from using the community edition as this provides me with a great solution for home lab use, as well as being able to spread the word into the enterprise and having a solid background on the solution,” said Larry Smith Jr., a Nexenta community member. “If all companies provided a community edition to home users for their labs, now that would be amazing.”
The Community allows a growing base of visionary storage professionals to engage in dialog around OpenSDS issues and leading practices. The Community provides early access to upcoming Nexenta software releases, forums on topics of interest, and a renewed plug-in development program with Nexenta prizes for winning designs. The latest forum is for NexentaStor on OpenStack, which is based on the company’s leading practice and configuration guides that make use of the Nexenta Cinder driver and its new certification for the Kilo release of OpenStack.

Their belief in an open, collaborative environment gives my customers the freedom to develop stronger ecosystems and most importantly, control their own destiny.”
“The software-defined storage market is growing quickly, and it promises to be one of the key enterprise storage technologies of the future,” said Eric Burgener, research director at IDC. “While many enterprises have deployed it, others are still learning about how best to leverage it. Community programs like Nexenta’s OpenSDS User Community provide easy, free access to this technology, and Nexenta’s proven track record of working with open source software developers provides a welcoming forum for storage professionals to familiarize themselves with its benefits.”
“Our community represents a place where we collaborate with our users on the advancement of OpenSDS,” said Thomas Cornely, Nexenta’s Chief Product Officer. “Nexenta’s open source-based software and our investment in a platform committed to the freedom of choice that open, software-defined storage represents, demonstrates that together we can drive meaningful change. Our growing membership shows that the world wants to move toward the untethered independence that Software-Defined everything –what we call OpenSDx—provides.”
The Nexenta Community also includes news, links to white papers and social content. The NexentaStor Community Edition, version 4.0.3 is available today, and the next generation of NexentaStor will be released to the Community in the coming months.
Nexenta is an active participant and contributor to OpenStack efforts, helping to promote the standard. Nexenta Wins Software Vendor of the Year Award at the 2015 European IT & Software Excellence Awards
Nexenta is recognized for its Open Source-driven community innovation, 100% channel GTM programs, and its strong partner eco-system WW
London, UK – April 8, 2015 Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) today announced that it has won Software Vendor of the Year at the European IT & Software Excellence awards. IT Europa’s European IT & Software Excellence Awards 2015 recognise best practices in customer solutions by Systems Integrators, Solution VARs, MSPs and ISVs across Europe.
The Gala Awards dinner took place at the Lancaster London hotel on March 25 to honor this year winners across Europe who have excelled in their approach to using technology and their ability to support a structured distribution channel.
The Nexenta Partner Program is designed to help support partners throughout the lifecycle of the partnership - from initial engagement to joint marketing, sales and support, making it stand out from the competition. Nexenta was announced as Software Vendor of the Year for its strong channel support including our close work with the UK distributor Getech Distribution.
Guy Watts, Managing Director, Getech Ltd, said: “Nexenta’s SDS solution offers an exciting opportunity for us in the storage arena. Our goal is to disrupt the stranglehold that the likes of NetApp and EMC have on the market. After meeting and speaking to a number of key resellers and customers it is clear the market is keen to explore new alternatives to the big hardware storage providers. The Software-Defined world offers a real alternative and Nexenta’s storage is underpinning the data centre of the future. As with all the solutions we supply, Getech will be offering a fully certified technical support team to support the roll out of Nexenta, providing a total supply and support service.”
Don Lopes, Director of Channels and Inside Sales, said: “This award recognizes the close relationship we have with our channel partners. We are proud to help support their businesses and bring value to our customers, while driving differentiation in the market. Being a channel focused company, our partner program is designed to ensure they have the support they need.”

Leading European Digital Hosting Company Runs its Public Cloud on Nexenta Open Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Wirehive achieves optimal security, scalability, flexibility, resilience, and performance management with its advanced Software-Defined Data Center based on Nexenta
Santa Clara, CA and London, UK – 25 March 2015 - Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that it has been chosen by Wirehive, a UK based digital hosting company, to meet its demand for a storage solution to support its public cloud offering. Wirehive required a solution that could perform at the highest level, while remaining cost effective and covering peak demands for critical customer requirements.
Wirehive is an expert and agile multi-platform digital hosting company that works exclusively with digital agencies and their clients. Wirehive has become a critical part of its clients’ brands. It serves as a managed hosting expert, building and managing customized hosting solutions with a superior level of support. The company provides public, private and hybrid cloud services to its clients through virtual dedicated servers running VMware.
Wirehive needed a solution that could support its public cloud offering. It needed to provide scalability and flexibility to deliver significant growth in services and handle sudden bursts of activity aligned with marketing campaigns. It’s existing solution was proving inadequate to the demands placed on it and incapable of keeping up with Wirehive’s growth plans.
Simon Green, Technical Director at Wirehive, came in contact with Nexenta through a reseller. Green was quickly convinced that NexentaStor was the right solution for the job after evaluating its underlying saleable architecture. “We were pretty much sold on the technology even before we saw the pricing. Pricing was an added bonus,” Green comments. “With the Nexenta solution you get all the features straight out of the box without having to pay more to unlock additional features.”
Wirehive opted for the NexentaStor High Availability (HA) Cluster based on Supermicro servers with 70 TB of capacity utilizing multiple redundancy levels of RAID protection and additional read cache provided by HGST (formerly sTec) SAS SSD combined with write cache vis the HGST ZeusRAM SAS SSD. By choosing the HA option, Wirehive can enjoy significant resilience and redundancy capabilities while managing and controlling the shared storage. “We have no intention of using anything else apart from NexentaStor. As far as we’re concerned it’s the best solution out there, commented Green.”
“Wirehive looked for resilience and flexibility for its public cloud offering and NexentaStor was the perfect fit for the job. Nexenta’s close integration with VMware was another key factor for Wirehive as NexentaStor provided the hosting company with a platform for critical virtual applications without affecting performance or reliability,” explained Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta. “NexentaStor also allows Wirehive to support tailored campaigns for customers and eradicated any concerns over its ability to handle short, sharp bursts.”
