Leading European University and Research Institute Run on Nexenta Open Source-based Software Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Ruhr University Increases Storage Performance, Flexibility and Avoids Vendor Lock-in While Lowering TCO for Its Big Data and High Performance Computing (HPC) Platforms
Santa Clara, CA & Munich, Germany – March 18, 2015 -- Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) today announced that the, Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS), a research institute at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB), supports its research with NexentaStor. Located in the heart of Europe, Ruhr-University Bochum has over 5,600 employees, 41,000 students from over 130 countries, and focuses on the development of innovative scientific institutions like ICAMS.
Founded in 2008, ICAMS at RUB focuses on the development and application of a new generation of simulation tools for multi-scale materials modelling with the aim of reducing development cost and time for new materials. The center’s research on new materials via this interdisciplinary approach makes ICAMS globally unique. Within the approach taken by ICAMS, the different length scales that are relevant for materials – from the atomic structure to macroscopic properties of materials – are bridged by an interdisciplinary team of world-renowned scientists from engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
To support its research resulting from their High Performance Computing (HPC) system, the institution needed state of the art IT services via a Software Defined Data Center approach. An existing RAID legacy system that saved the results from the HPC calculations, struggled to cope with the workload as more students accessed the data. The institution needed a high performance, high capacity, flexible, open, and cost effective solution to replace it. It also required a partner that could guarantee support. ICAMS quickly saw Nexenta as the only solution in the market that could meet its needs. To test the benefits of Software-Defined Storage, the NexentaStor Community Edition was installed into an existing system. After a positive experience, the team decided to install NexentaStor Enterprise Edition to replace the existing standard RAID system.
As a public entity, the university is always looking for ways to save money but it still needed a reliable system that could handle the workload. Opting for a Software-Defined Storage approach, which avoids vendor lock-in, the institution can choose from any standard hardware provider. With the support from long standing HPC storage partner MEGWARE, the institution implemented NexentaStor on standard Surpermicro hardware. The system was easy to deploy and ready to use within a day. Offering data reduction and snapshots solved the institutions’ IT needs while staying on a budget.
Mr. Caesar, IT Administrator as ICAMS said: “We like that with Nexenta we were able to calculate the total cost for the entire lifespan of the system right from day one with the additional performance and capacity management capabilities. With other vendors it is extremely difficult to plan budgets after the initial three years due to hidden costs. Our experience was that cost for support quickly gets out of hand with legacy vendors. Since we are in the public sector we cannot plan for expensive services three years ahead. We like openness and flexibility in deploying Nexenta with no vendor lock-in.“
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta, commented: “ICAMS needed a high performance solution and a high level of partner support and we were pleased to be able to meet these demands. The major factor for ICAMS was the ability to avoid vendor lock-in and with NexentaStor we achieved this.”

Global Cloud Service Provider for Big Data Analytics in Oil and Gas Industry Runs on Nexenta Open Source-driven Software Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Drillinginfo Helps Enterprises Make Better, Faster Decisions via Best Cost/Performance and Web Scale Infrastructure to Manage Massive Data Growth
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – March 12, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced the deployment of its platform for Drillinginfo, an Austin-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider of data-driven intelligence to the oil and gas industry. What began as a simple online permit and completion-mapping database in 1999, became one of the 500 fastest growing companies in the United States by 2008, according to Inc. Magazine, and has one of the largest oil and gas databases in the world. Drillinginfo delivers game-changing information for oil and gas energy exploration decision support, enabling companies to get to better insights, faster.
Prior to drilling for oil, companies must evaluate up to eight different silos of data to meet regulatory and compliance guidelines; the ultimate goal is to have the least amount of risk – and the greatest success in finding oil. Seismic and geological data provide analysis of rock structures, based on drilling location. Legal documents, such as county court records for leases, date back hundreds of years. The volume of data that oil companies must sift through is immense, growing each and every year, and becoming more and more complicated to access and analyze. Drillinginfo’s Chief Technology Officer, Mike Couvillion said, “When our storage architect, Andy Davis, approached me about the company’s growing data storage requirements, we discussed the need to implement a scalable platform that would support our current and future storage requirements.” Drillinginfo has roughly 900 terabytes (TB) of data, and adds roughly 20-25 TB of data per month.
Nexenta supports Drillinginfo’s rapid growth – while meeting the company’s budgeting, financial and planning requirements.
Drillinginfo turned to NexentaStor, Nexenta's flagship Software-Defined Storage (SDS) platform, as a replacement for its current storage system. “Our data storage team doesn’t have to worry about running out of storage as we add data and the systems are fully high availability (HA) – there isn't a single point of failure,” added Couvillion. As Couvillion’s team analyzes the financial benefit of using Nexenta, the most important metric is cost per terabyte. “Because the Nexenta system is so redundant, it can be put on Supermicro, which costs us about $416/TB. That is well below the industry average, and there is no additional licensing for replication. At that cost, the Nexenta SDS practically recovers its cost on delivery.”
“Drillinginfo is a perfect example of how Software-Defined Storage can eliminate performance and scalability challenges,” said Jill Orhun, VP of Marketing & Strategy at Nexenta. “The right decision on storage is instrumental to running effective infrastructure, and that has ramifications for companies’ bottom line. Nexenta is proud to assist Drillinginfo with managing and storing its large volume of business-critical data.”

European Healthcare IT Project Runs on Nexenta Open Source-Driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Nordic Medtest funded by Sweden’s Ministry of Enterprise, Energy and Communications, gains better performance, scale, resilience, and easier management with Nexenta and Layer 8 IT-Services
Santa Clara, CA and Stockholm, SE – 10 March 2015 - Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that it has been chosen by Nordic Medtest, a Swedish healthcare IT project, to meet its demand for a safe, stable, flexible and high performing SAN solution. Nordic Medtest has a full range of testing services that help customers to develop, test and safely implement IT services in healthcare.
Nordic Medtest is a project funded by Vinnova, the Swedish agency for innovation, and involves three key groups - the Council of Värmland, Compare - an umbrella organization that provides a community for IT companies to collaborate with each other, and the University of Karlstad, which helped secure the grant for Nordic Medtest. The aim of the project is to provide an independent and open competence centre where healthcare organizations can develop, test and safely introduce new and innovative IT services in healthcare in cooperation with IT system and software suppliers.
The pre-study for the Nordic Medtest project began in September 2012, with a view of securing grant funding by April 2013 and having a technical infrastructure in place by September 2015. The organization’s existing SAN, used for the Compare Testlab, was based on open source software and standard hardware but concerns over its stability grew, particularly around functionality and performance.
Torbjorn Wiger, CTO of Compare and Nordic Medtest, approached Layer 8 IT-Services, Nexenta’s partner in Sweden, to discuss NexentaStor. Wiger was interested in NexentaStor as it is a cost-effective solution, based on open source software. “We wanted a safe, stable, flexible, high performing SAN solution, but we did not want to be locked into a proprietary storage solution. Having an open system on standard server hardware was an important factor for us,” said Torbjorn Wiger.
For the hardware, Layer 8 installed two Dell PowerEdge R720s to run NexentaStor, interconnected with a Dell PowerVault MD3060e storage array in a high availability configuration. The NexentaStor/Layer 8 system ensures that Nordic Medtest can enjoy high capacity and performance to easily meet the requirements when the project comes fully into service in September 2015.
“A high capacity, high performing and flexible solution is vital for Nordic Medtest to grow and succeed. With this project, it’s not just a simple business organization, the IT infrastructure performance can directly affect the welfare of sick and vulnerable people,” explained Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta. “NexentaStor allowed for a secure, stable and more importantly an open source SAN solution with no vendor lock-in.”

George Washington University Runs on Nexenta Software Defined Storage
Top Ranked Medical Research Institution Improves Information Availability, Accuracy, and Security with Best Cost/Performance
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – March 5, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced the deployment of NexentaStor by George Washington University. The School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) is using NexentaStor to cost-effectively scale its storage capacity and ensure high availability and security of important data without requiring additional IT resources. Thanks to Nexenta, the university faculty have been able to focus on their efforts on research while minimizing the cost of procuring and managing storage. For example, the university was able to expand their existing Nexenta appliance by 16 TB for less than $7,000.
Founded in 1824, George Washington University SMHS runs highly-ranked programs in the health and biomedical sciences. SMHS research and teaching activities depend on seamless access to state-of-the-art IT to carry out their cutting-edge investigations into areas like cancer, epilepsy and genomics and proteomics,. The IT group supports the school’s 1,500 staff and faculty by taking care of everything from desktop support and user training to managing server and storage resources, including web servers and computational clusters for genomics analysis.
Garrett Fields, Technical Support Analyst, was tasked with looking at alternatives to SMHS’s existing storage infrastructure. Until recently, the university data center housed SMHS’s group and home drives. The university didn’t charge researchers by the terabyte, but contained costs by putting a cap on the amount of storage they could use. As the school’s researchers generated more and more data, this arrangement became increasingly problematic. Researchers were turning to workarounds—such as setting up external hard drives in their labs, which compromised both data security and accessibility.
To address these challenges, SMHS’s IT team was looking for an Open Software-Defined Storage system that could offer greater accuracy as well as the freedom from lock-in to certain vendors or hardware. After evaluating three different solutions, SMHS’s IT team determined that Nexenta was the best choice. Built-in high availability, quality of support, depth of expertise and focus on storage along with open source benefits were the key factors that led SMHS’s IT team to select NexentaStor.
“We needed a better solution,” said Fields. “Our researchers were looking for huge amounts of storage, and we thought we could meet their needs more cost-effectively than the university data center. But we were only going to take on responsibility for storage provision if we could ensure excellent performance and extraordinary reliability, as we achieved cost savings.”
Thanks to the administrative ease of Nexenta, the SMHS IT group was able to take on its new storage responsibilities without adding staff. In addition, eliminating time spent managing and troubleshooting researchers’ external drives allows existing staff to focus on other important IT initiatives. Scaling up is also much more cost-effective -- when the group reached 70 percent capacity on its backup server, it was able to add 16 TB for less than $7,000.
SMHS researchers who used to rely on external hard drives now enjoy much greater data security, availability and ease of access. At the same time, there is no difference in performance for other users.
Stated SMHS’s Fields, “Thanks to Nexenta, we’ve managed to free our researchers from restrictions on their storage, so they can move full steam ahead on their research, confident that they’re capturing and safeguarding all the data their projects generate.”
"We are honored to help The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences increase security and maintain performance for researchers, faculty and students by transitioning to an SDS solution that offers the flexibility of being ableto increase storage capacity as data requirements grow and, at the same time, keep costs low,” said Tarkan Maner, Chairman and CEO at Nexenta. “With high availability from Nexenta, ensuring that SMHS data can be brought up in a relatively recent state, the university also has a practical disaster recovery plan in place and can now avoid risks to data integrity and reliability – which is crucial given the university’s important research.”
Please refer to The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) case study for more implementation details.
