Nexenta Launches Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™
Nexenta Launches
Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™
Storage optimization
and deployment solution for VDI that delivers unmatched gains in performance, affordability
and improved user experience
SANTA CLARA, Calif.,
August 20, 2013--Nexenta Systems, Inc., the leading provider of Software-Defined
Storage solutions, today released Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™:
application-specific storage management and acceleration software that allows
Horizon View administrators to auto-configure, tune, deploy and optimize
storage for their VDI environment from their management console. Installed on VMware
vSphere®, the Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™ storage optimizer accelerates
storage performance even without the use of SSDs in the configuration and does
not require additional memory (RAM) to deliver this boost. The net effect is an
increase in the number of desktops a given configuration can support even while
delivering an improved user experience and offloading traffic from the storage
network (tests show up to 38x during I/O storms generated by desktop
provisioning for example). The solution drives down the cost per desktop,
reduces the amount of storage required for a View deployment and provides
real-time visibility and management of individual desktop users using the
storage resources.
VDI Proof of Concept Benefits
Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon ViewTM allows administrators to profile a VDI deployment before it "goes live" which allows for a full understanding of the performance and efficiency levels that will result. By taking the guesswork out of VDI deployments and allowing the application to uniquely auto-tune and configure the underlying storage, it is expected that Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon ViewTM will significantly increase the adoption rate of VDI deployments in enterprise environments of all sizes.
“Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™ takes the promise of
Software-Defined Storage and makes it a reality; defined by the application
itself, it is storage that delivers real customer benefit,” said Bridget
Warwick, Nexenta Systems CMO. “This is software that takes an application’s
storage preferences and best practices and uses that knowledge to auto-tune, configure,
deploy and accelerate access to whatever storage the system is using.”
“The Software-Defined storage landscape is still forming
with many vendors trying to re-cast their offering to fit the evolving
definition. In the meantime, Nexenta is actually delivering on the promise with
application-defined or, put more accurately, data-defined storage that has
tangible, measurable value for VMware Horizon ViewTM deployments,”
said Brian Garrett, VP ESG Lab, Enterprise Strategy Group. “Nexenta VSA for
VMware Horizon View™ is not only delivering that value as advertised
during ESG Lab testing, it’s also amazingly easy to deploy and use as it cost-effectively
addresses the performance and management challenges that are blocking a growing
number of organizations from realizing the compelling benefits of VDI.”
Certified with Cisco
Systems
Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™ has already been
certified as part of the Cisco UCS Platform VDI reference architecture whereby
up to 1600 desktops can be deployed on a single UCS blade chassis with UCS
C240s providing storage. This is the only VDI solution running entirely on a
Cisco UCS platform. It provides a comprehensive environment with compute,
networking, storage and virtualization functionality. Details of this reference
architecture can be found here.
“NexentaVSA for Horizon View is purposely designed storage
for VMware Horizon View™,” said Mason Uyeda, senior director, technical and
solution marketing, End-User Computing, VMware. “The solution, which includes
validations from VMware and Cisco and Nexenta, is optimized for the VMware
Horizon Fast Track architecture program to enable fast deployment,
cost-effectiveness and linear scalability.”
"After extensive research based on the offerings from
multiple vendors, a large hospital system selected Nexenta VSA for VMware
Horizon View™ for several reasons," said Mark Melvin, CTO at ePlus, a
leading Cisco, Nexenta, and VMware Partner. "ePlus consulted with the
hospital to develop an architecture for its environment, determining the
requirements and the best possible solution. Nexenta offered a
highly-competitive licensing model and the potential for large OpEx
savings. This was based on the cost per host of VSA that reduced the
overall SAN cost. This helped us bring the validated
Cisco solution to the customer with a higher degree of confidence.”
“Storage performance and configuration cost per seat are
commonly the deciding factor on whether or not a VDI POC is successful and will
be rolled out,” said Marc Staimer, founder, senior analyst, and CDS of Dragon
Slayer Consulting.“Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™ can make a huge difference
in both meaningfully improved VDI performance and significantly lowering total
storage cost. I would recommend anyone implementing VDI take a long look at
optimizing the storage component of their Horizon View deployment with Nexenta
VSA for VMware Horizon View™.”
Availability
Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™ is available for
purchase immediately and a 45 day trial version can be downloaded from the
company’s website. Nexenta plans to demo Nexenta VSA for VMware Horizon View™ at
VMworld® in San Francisco on August 25-29, as well as VMworld Europe in
Barcelona on October 15-17.

Nexenta Welcomes EMC to the Software-Defined Storage Market
Nexenta Welcomes EMC to the Software-Defined Storage Market
Nexenta looks forward to educating enterprise customers about this burgeoning market
May 6, 2013 Santa Clara, CA — Nexenta® Systems, Inc., the leading Software-Defined Storage company, today issued a warm welcome to EMC Corporation as it announces its intent to enter this exciting and growing market in the second half of 2013. EMC announced its plans during the EMC World conference getting underway today in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Nexenta, founded in 2004, has been shipping its NexentaStor solution since 2008. Now in its third generation, the company has more than 5,000 customer deployments around the world and over 700 petabytes of data under management. The NexentaStor solution is based on OpenStorage ZFS technology and combines state-of-the-art software with an open architecture, which is certified and supported on a wide choice of industry standard hardware.
Customers have embraced this approach because it is significantly cheaper than proprietary storage solutions, eliminates vendor lock-in, and gives them total flexibility in terms of architecting and refreshing their storage hardware configurations. Historically, storage solutions offered by the large suppliers consist of proprietary operating system software that only runs on that same vendor’s hardware. This results in expensive, long-term commitments especially when storage needs grow. The recent trend toward Software-Defined Storage, led by Nexenta, separates the software layer from the hardware platform, giving customers control, flexibility and significant cost-savings compared to the old model.
“This is an exciting day for Nexenta and our solution partners,” commented Mark Lockareff, Nexenta CEO. “Having a company like EMC enter our market certainly validates what we have been saying all along; namely, that the old storage model is broken. Customers deserve to have a choice when it comes to selecting the hardware solutions that best fit their needs, and not be held hostage by their primary storage vendor. Because our software can run on a wide choice of hardware offered by our many partners including Dell and Cisco, it is quickly gaining market acceptance. As we learn more about EMC’s solution, I am confident we will continue to be seen as a leader in this important market space.”

Library chooses Nexenta for future proof OpenStorage solution
Nexenta Booked For Storage Infrastructure at Rotterdam Library
Library chooses Nexenta for future proof OpenStorage solution
Almere, March 28, 2013 — Nexenta® Systems, the world leader in Software-defined Storage, today announced that the Rotterdam Library has upgraded its storage environment to an OpenStorage solution based on NexentaStor. By moving from a legacy storage infrastructure to Nexenta, the library has deployed a sustainable, future proof solution that provides optimised cost efficiencies and scalability.
Attracting 3.4 million annual visitors and with over 100.000 members, the Library is the most visited cultural institution in Rotterdam. Managing the 3 million books and other media items being loaned out every year, the library continuously faces the challenges of meeting visitor expectations and managing and storing the millions of loan transactions effectively. With public budgets shrinking, the IT department had to look for a storage solution that would lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and provide the flexibility to support future growth of the library’s storage capacity.
To provide sufficient storage capacity to manage the visitor’s 300 VDI terminals, 100 VDI’s setup for internal use, all of the 100 internal PCs, and multiple databases for the library’s loan system, Nexenta partner Rhodix designed and implemented a customer centric storage solution offering High Availability and Cluster Functionality. IT specialist Rhodix combined NexentaStor, Nexenta HA Cluster plug-in software on Dell PowerVault MD3060e storage systems and Dell PowerEdge R720 Servers, and created a 30 TB storage solution. The new infrastructure can be easily expanded to meet the library's future storage needs.
Pascal Ringens, Technical Manager at Rhodix said, “Using Nexenta is a delight. The solutions perfectly match the storage needs of our customers in the local government, health-care and industry segments by offering the degrees of freedom needed to meet increasingly varying and complex customer demands.”
Sjaak Westdijk, Infrastructure Specialist at Rotterdam Library, said: "Picking Nexenta will help expand and improve all of our services to our customers, to levels unattainable with competing storage solutions, and certainly not at this competitive price level. With the new Sofware-defined-Storage environment from Nexenta we have stayed within the tight IT budget but have installed a sustainable, enterprise feature rich, storage solution for many years to come."
Fabian Nowee, Regional Sales Manager Benelux at Nexenta, concludes: “The Rotterdam Library is a great example of how our solutions can really impact the public sector in the Netherlands and beyond. With pressure on IT budgets, but rapidly growing storage needs, Nexenta offers an attractive proposition to all industries including the government sector because it can scale competitively. By partnering with technology vendors like Dell and key partners like Rhodix, we have the ability to help many organisations to remain customer-centric and competitive in this challenging economy.”

Area Data Systems Punctuates 2012 with Nexenta Premium Partner Status
Area Data Systems Punctuates 2012 with Nexenta Premium Partner Status
Company Ends Banner Year by Doubling Annual Revenue
Anaheim, CA — January 23, 2013 — Area Data Systems, Inc., the storage architecture authority for enterprise data solutions, announces a doubling of revenue for 2012, in conjunction with achieving top-tier Nexenta Premium Partner status. Area Data Systems’ success is notably due to NexentaStor emerging as the ideal storage for big data and cloud deployments. Nexenta Systems, the leader in Software-defined Storage, granted Area Data Systems premium status based on its unique "Engineer-to-Engineer" approach to architecting storage solutions and delivering exceptional customer support.
“As a long-term partner, Area Data Systems has seen dramatic growth alongside Nexenta ,” says Evan Powell, CEO of Nexenta. “By collaborating with Nexenta, the team at Area Data Systems has shown an unsurpassed dedication to OpenStorage and now, as a Nexenta Premium Partner, we expect continued success and attention to customer satisfaction from Area Data Systems.”
Area Data Systems is entering into its fifth year of working with ZFS and the OpenStorage unified storage platform. With thousands of terabytes under NexentaStor management, Area Data Systems is able to leverage its collective deployment knowledge to optimize and performance-tune future NexentaStor deployments. “The Area solution cycle involves the ability to present a unique engineer-to-engineer approach that ensures the storage architected is the optimal deployment possible,” says William Huang, president of Area Data Systems. “Adding 24-hour support wasn’t an issue for our Nexenta deployments, since Area experiences a sustainably lower service call rate than the rest of the storage industry, due to years of experience developing Nexenta storage solutions.”
What does Premium Partner status mean for the enterprise storage customer? Nexenta looks for a high level of consultation in Premium Partners, along with support throughout the entire solution cycle, to deliver unlimited storage scalability, end-to-end storage data integrity, and five-nines reliability. With Area Data Systems’ proven storage experience and long-term partnership with Nexenta, customers can be assured that their concerns for a tailored, unified storage design will be exceeded. For example, ScaleMatrix, a leader in private cloud hosting technology, has recently deployed roughly 1PB (petabyte) of scalable capacity to power their data center.
“Innovative storage technologies have become vital for cloud and traditionally hosted services, which need to scale without the worry of escalating costs. Area Data Systems provides a legacy storage alternative with its NexentaStor experience”, said Marc Clark, Sr. Director of Cloud Sales & Business Development. “ScaleMatrix is committed to providing clients with best-in-class hosting solutions, and with Area Data Systems’ help to provide scalability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness; we can offer the most complete solutions to IT decision makers.”

Schuberg Philis Picks Nexenta for Mission Critical Cloud Service
Schuberg Philis Picks Nexenta for Mission Critical Cloud Service
Amsterdam — 18 December 2012 — Nexenta® Systems, the leader in Software-defined Storage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that Schuberg Philis, a provider of mission critical outsourcing services, has selected a 1.1PB Nexentastor solution to underpin part of its cloud service.
Based in Schiphol and with revenues of more than €48.6 million, Schuberg Philis provides its customer with 100% uptime for mission critical applications that support large organisations’ IT operations. Schuberg Philis takes full end-to-end responsibility for its customers’ applications providing 100% availability.
Traditionally Schuberg Philis used customer-dedicated IT infrastructure as a foundation for these mission critical application landscapes. In early 2011 Schuberg Philis decided to look at creating an alternative mission critical service for its customers and prospects, based on cloud technology. With a reputation for superior customer service and performance, it needed a storage solution to underpin its new cloud service. One that could handle the performance requirements and could scale cost effectively.
After researching the market Schuberg Philis opted for a Nexenta solution. After rigorous testing they decided on several NexentaStor HA clusters which they built on 10 HP DL380s, 24 DataON shelves and 16 STEC devices combined with 552 Toshiba Nearline SAS Disks, Schuberg Philis explains: “Nexenta’s software, which is based on the open source ZFS file system, fitted perfectly into our cloud design. Not only is it a robust platform with data protection features that all of our technical team love using, but it also offers very high performance that that will support our customers’ needs whilst still giving us the ability to easily scale up and out when needed.”
Schuberg Philis has installed multiple NexentaStor HA clusters, thereby providing the company with 1.1PB of raw capacity. In addition to unlimited snapshots, other important features include hybrid storage pooling, deduplication, thin provisioning and the ability to find, detect and recover silent data corruption through NexentaStor’s airtight end-to-end data integrity.
Funs Kessen, Mission Critical Engineer at Schuberg Philis concludes: “With its interoperability and scalability, Nexenta was an important component for our cloud platform. We expect a lot of our customers to take up the opportunity, and if this leads to exploding data growth rates, Nexenta is our secret weapon."
Evan Powell, CEO of Nexenta says: “Innovative storage technologies have become vital for cloud-based services, which need to scale without the worry of escalating costs. As an alternative to traditional legacy storage systems from big vendors, Nexenta helps service providers, like Schuberg Philis, meet its client needs effectively while remaining competitive in the current climate.”
