Nexenta Launches Revolutionary Software-Defined Scale Out Object Storage Solution for OpenStack and Big Data Infrastructures
NexentaEdge Delivers High-Performance Block, Swift and S3 Object Services with Industry First Global Inline Deduplication on Petabyte Scale Cluster
Santa Clara, CA. – August 19, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader of Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, today announced the launch of NexentaEdge 1.0 – the industry’s first software-only scale out block and object storage solution designed to deliver high performance global inline deduplication on petabyte scale clusters. NexentaEdge is ideally suited for next-generation open source cloud infrastructures and Big Data repositories requiring performance, scale and low total cost of ownership. The solution will be demonstrated for the first time at VMworld US 2014, August 24-28 in San Francisco.
Object storage is increasingly taking center stage as a required storage option to support emerging cloud-based and Big Data applications. Breaking with the constraints of legacy enterprise storage, modern object stores are specifically designed to run on extremely low cost shared nothing clusters and present all capacity as one single pool. Key characteristics include scaling to virtually unlimited sizes while remaining easy to manage and highly resilient to device and node failures. IDC forecasts that worldwide revenue for file-based and object-based storage will reach $38 billion by 2017, a 65% increase from the estimated $23 billion revenue in 2013. Even more significantly, IDC forecasts total capacity shipments for file and object storage to reach 173 exabytes by 2017, more than 4 times the capacity shipped in 2013.
"The challenge for IT decision makers is that the growth in unstructured data is placing huge pressure on already tight IT budgets," said Ashish Nadkarni, Storage Systems Research Director, IDC. "File-based and object-based solutions are much more versatile and will quickly outpace more rigid, hardware-based options. Software-based storage solutions based on commodity hardware platforms will lead the charge in the file- and object-based storage market."
NexentaEdge is a new scalable solution that helps enterprises store and manage the growing amount of unstructured data including film, medical images, graphic designs and cloud backup/archive. The solution allows users to store any amount of data in a single, highly available repository with industry leading TCO thanks to inline data deduplication functionality.
Complementing the existing NexentaStor solution, NexentaEdge 1.0 features include:
- Industry-standard x86 server utilization running Ubuntu or Red Hat Linux
- iSCSI Block, Cinder, Swift and S3 Object APIs
- Scale out, shared nothing architecture of any scale

"The explosion of unstructured data driven by today's trends of social, mobile, the Internet of Things, and Big Data is hard to ignore. The legacy hardware- and new appliance-based systems are not designed to handle these sorts of workloads, data types and volumes. However, it has become the norm for the legacy vendors to keep chucking more hardware at the problem," said Tarkan Maner, CEO at Nexenta. "Nexenta delivers the most comprehensive Software-Defined Storage portfolio on any hardware platform, across any type of protocol or workload. With today's announcement of NexentaEdge we are extending our disruptive technology capabilities. Now, we are providing enterprises and cloud service providers with a state-of-the-art Software-Defined Solution portfolio delivering ultra-scale, performance and TCO from block and file to object storage on any platform and for any workload or app."

Innovative Building Design and Construction Company Improves IT Performance with Nexenta’s Software Defined Storage
Santa Clara, CA and Almere, Amsterdam - August 18th, 2014 - Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader of Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage), today announced that Architecten aan de Maas has chosen Nexenta for its new, mirrored, storage environment. By adopting NexentaStor, the architectural practice has been able to upgrade its storage and boost its performance capacity allowing all of its team to collaborate more effectively, quickly and successfully.
Nexenta addressed two key challenges for Architecten aan de Maas. The company was managing huge quantities of data every day – a typical project needs 25 GB of storage and then it must be kept on file and archived after the projects are completed. Architecten aan de Maas also needed to boost their infrastructure performance because the incumbent storage solution couldn’t meet the needed requirements.
Peter Hilkens, system manager with Architecten aan de Maas, explained: “We were busy virtualizing our physical servers while also improving our storage performance. The physical servers had reached their maximum capacity, so it was critical that we upgraded the entire storage environment. We needed a scalable storage solution with high read and write speeds, which would also be able to meet the future growth requirements of the company.”
After reviewing a number of storage suppliers, Architecten aan de Maas opted for Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage solution, NexentaStor, combined with 4 HP Proliant 360 G6 servers.
“With NexentaStor’s High Availability feature we can now guarantee 24/7 accessibility to our storage,” noted Hilkens. “Given that our team creates and saves huge quantities of data every day, and that this data is mirrored across both locations for continuity purposes, it’s vital for us that our data centre is always available.”
The migration trajectory to the Nexenta platform was set up by IT service provider NLcom and was problem-free: “During the migration we didn’t have to do any physical unplugging, which was welcome and a bonus for us. With the old systems, if we needed to change discs and migrate data to their replacements, the storage servers were offline for at least an hour. The transition to Nexenta was flawless, and in the future too, adding and changing discs will be far easier and less disruptive.”
“Our success in vertical markets, such as the engineering industry, demonstrates the versatility and the universal added value that Nexenta brings to market. We are extremely happy to have provided an effective solution that can grow to match the anticipated storage needs of Architecten aan de Maas over the next five years and beyond. Together with our partners in the region, we will continue to help businesses across different market segments to manage and support their data growth,” concluded Jacco van Achterberg, Sales Director, Benelux at Nexenta.

Award Winning European Visual Effects Company Selects Nexenta's Software-Defined Storage to Manage its Growing Storage Needs
Award Winning European Visual Effects Company Selects Nexenta's Software-Defined Storage to Manage its Growing Storage Needs
BlueBolt has “Great Expectations” with Nexenta
Santa Clara, CA and London, UK, August 5th, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software- Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, has announced it has been chosen by BlueBolt an award-winning visual effects (VFX) firm, to manage its growing enterprise storage needs.
Founded in 2009, BlueBolt has quickly grown into one of London’s most respected boutique VFX organisations. It has provided the visual effects for many award-winning productions including BBC’s Great Expectations (BAFTA Winner), Mandela – Long Walk to Freedom, the Emmy award winning TV show Game of Thrones (Season One) along with being part of multiple vendors on a sections of shots on Pirates of the Caribbean, The Fast and The Furious, and the Oscar-winning 007 movie Skyfall.
An adaptive storage solution that can manage the growing workload of BlueBolt’s creative and technical staff is imperative to keep up with the evolving demands in the industry. As with any business where data is mission critical to its operations, it is vital that BlueBolt can rely on its storage solution to deliver high-performance. It must also have the ability to grow with the demands of the company, whilst remaining cost effective.
Working with Escape Technologies, BlueBolt selected Nexenta’s SDS solution to centralise and manage its storage infrastructure and replace the various storage platforms it had in place. Collaborating with its technology partner, Dell, to provide the hardware, and utilising the open-source ZFS-based operating system, BlueBolt implemented a two node HA Cluster with 144TB of raw NexentaStor capacity, which provides 68TB useable capacity. The entire solution is designed to manage its ever-growing data needs.
“The amount of critical data we are creating at BlueBolt is always growing. Data loss or system failure would be unacceptable. We needed to implement a secure, reliable, scalable storage solution and chose Nexenta because of its growing reputation in the visual effects community,” said George Siddiqui, CTO, BlueBolt. “We now have peace of mind that our storage can cope with our workloads. Nexenta has all of the features we would expect from an enterprise storage platform while remaining one of the most cost-effective solutions on the market.”
Jacco Van Achterberg, EMEA Sales Director at Nexenta, said: “Our SDS offering is perfectly suited to the media space, where large files need to be easily accessible at the touch of a button. Leading European Energy Supplier Powers its Business with Nexenta Software-Defined Storage
Leading European Energy Supplier Powers its Business with Nexenta Software-Defined Storage
Cost-effective and scalable unified storage solution boosts reliability and performance
Munich, Germany and Santa Clara, CA, USA, August 4th, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced that Stadtwerke Tuttlingen (SWT), a regional German energy supplier, has chosen Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage solution to underpin its entire infrastructure.
Founded in 1896, SWT is responsible for providing electricity, gas, and water utilities to over 34,200 residents across 980 square miles in the South West area of Germany. Along with its responsibility for the power grid, SWT also supplies natural gas to private and business customers while managing two-thirds of Tuttlingen’s drinking water and urban drainage.
SWT was running multiple high performance databases (Oracle, MSSQL) but the existing storage solution was hampered by relatively bad optimisation. The system was only four years old but also incapable of supporting a planned VDI deployment.
After testing and evaluating a system that was recommended by Nexenta’s German premium partner Sievers Group, SWT opted for a 60TB NexentaStor license to underpin the entire SWT infrastructure at its headquarter’s data centre.
Meik Müller, IT Manager at SWT commented: “To keep our IT-system flexible enough to react with a rapidly evolving energy market, we were looking for a new storage system that offered high performance, flexibility and high availability. We already had experience with software-defined storage but it was when we met Nexenta that we knew we had the right solution.”
Using NexentaStor, SWT has significantly increased the performance of its storage environments while keeping its costs low. One of the key selling points for SWT was the simplicity of Nexenta: There was no need for complex licensing. NexentaStor features, such as, unlimited snapshots, thin provisioning and hybrid storage pooling, helped SWT to implement cost-effective storage with high performance.
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta said: “Our SDS solution cuts vendor lock-in, radically improves TCO and offers improved performance and scalability. Our solution helps companies like SWT avoid the MESS (Massive Expensive Storage Systems) and concentrate on growing and building their business – boosting productivity and customer service. It’s a win win for everyone.”

University of Sussex Graduates to Software-Defined Storage from Nexenta
University of Sussex Graduates to Software-Defined Storage from Nexenta
Nexenta Scores Top Marks for Flexibility, Scalability and Cost
London, UK and Santa Clara, CA, USA, July 31, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, today announced that the University of Sussex, a world leading teaching and research institution, has selected NexentaStor™ to improve network performance and prepare for the future development of its diverse, flexible IT infrastructure.
The IT department at the University of Sussex provides support for the entire university – 13,000 students and over 2,100 staff – with a single home directory service that enables users to access files from whatever device and operating system they are using, wherever they are on the campus.
With the original solution approaching the end of its useful life, the IT department needed to explore new solutions. Working with NAS UK to replace its existing system, the university looked at a number of options including sticking with the incumbent supplier, or switching to other solutions, including Nexenta. After weighing up all the options, Nexenta was selected because of its flexibility, scalability and attractive economics.
James Goodlet, head of infrastructure services, IT services, University of Sussex, explains: “Nexenta was actually the most cost effective but that wasn’t why we chose it. We got a really good feel from the company, talked with them extensively and did a thorough evaluation with their support. They even sent developers on to the campus to talk through some of the issues we saw. We were very impressed with that level of support and feedback. It’s unusual to have such an open relationship with a vendor.”
Alongside NexentaStor, the university chose Dell R720 servers which NAS UK arranged with particular SAS HBA cards and solid state disks (SSDs) to support optimal integration. The resulting solution delivered the performance the university sought, and paved the way for sustainable expansion. Indeed, as a result of the stability, scalability and performance of Nexenta, the University of Sussex’s IT department is now looking to other campus storage systems and even further opportunities to consolidate, increase speed, and grow efficiently.
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta, comments: “The Nexenta implementation marks a milestone for the university and a move towards an industry- leading, best of breed Software Defined data enterprise that will support the campus, its students and staff now and for the future.”
