The Nexenta User Community gives thousands of IT professionals a forum to discuss the latest in software-defined storage solutions and the ability to work with new open source releases unavailable anywhere else. Participation in the Community is a driver of Nexenta’s OpenSDS innovation, architectures, solutions, and software and hardware platforms.
- Over 100,000 Nexenta Community Edition solution transactions at no cost.
- Over 46,000 users and community members.
- Over 10,000 questions and comments.
“As a NexentaStor Community Edition (CE) user for over 4 years now, I continually see the benefit from using the community edition as this provides me with a great solution for home lab use, as well as being able to spread the word into the enterprise and having a solid background on the solution,” said Larry Smith Jr., a Nexenta community member. “If all companies provided a community edition to home users for their labs, now that would be amazing.”
The Community allows a growing base of visionary storage professionals to engage in dialog around OpenSDS issues and leading practices. The Community provides early access to upcoming Nexenta software releases, forums on topics of interest, and a renewed plug-in development program with Nexenta prizes for winning designs. The latest forum is for NexentaStor on OpenStack, which is based on the company’s leading practice and configuration guides that make use of the Nexenta Cinder driver and its new certification for the Kilo release of OpenStack.
“In a world where data and application growth are exploding, IT staff needs a way to stay on top of the techniques that will keep their companies ahead of the curve,” said Dominic Watts of premium partner, NAS UK. “Nexenta’s commitment to facilitating the contributions of experts from around the world, places them in a class above any other company. Their belief in an open, collaborative environment gives my customers the freedom to develop stronger ecosystems and most importantly, control their own destiny.”
“The software-defined storage market is growing quickly, and it promises to be one of the key enterprise storage technologies of the future,” said Eric Burgener, research director at IDC. “While many enterprises have deployed it, others are still learning about how best to leverage it. Community programs like Nexenta’s OpenSDS User Community provide easy, free access to this technology, and Nexenta’s proven track record of working with open source software developers provides a welcoming forum for storage professionals to familiarize themselves with its benefits.”
“Our community represents a place where we collaborate with our users on the advancement of OpenSDS,” said Thomas Cornely, Nexenta’s Chief Product Officer. “Nexenta’s open source-based software and our investment in a platform committed to the freedom of choice that open, software-defined storage represents, demonstrates that together we can drive meaningful change. Our growing membership shows that the world wants to move toward the untethered independence that Software-Defined everything –what we call OpenSDx—provides.”
The Nexenta Community also includes news, links to white papers and social content. The NexentaStor Community Edition, version 4.0.3 is available today, and the next generation of NexentaStor will be released to the Community in the coming months.

London, UK – April 8, 2015 Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) today announced that it has won Software Vendor of the Year at the European IT & Software Excellence awards. IT Europa’s European IT & Software Excellence Awards 2015 recognise best practices in customer solutions by Systems Integrators, Solution VARs, MSPs and ISVs across Europe.
The Gala Awards dinner took place at the Lancaster London hotel on March 25 to honor this year winners across Europe who have excelled in their approach to using technology and their ability to support a structured distribution channel.
The Nexenta Partner Program is designed to help support partners throughout the lifecycle of the partnership - from initial engagement to joint marketing, sales and support, making it stand out from the competition. Nexenta was announced as Software Vendor of the Year for its strong channel support including our close work with the UK distributor Getech Distribution.
Guy Watts, Managing Director, Getech Ltd, said: “Nexenta’s SDS solution offers an exciting opportunity for us in the storage arena. We are proud to help support their businesses and bring value to our customers, while driving differentiation in the market. Being a channel focused company, our partner program is designed to ensure they have the support they need.”

Leading European Digital Hosting Company Runs its Public Cloud on Nexenta Open Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Wirehive achieves optimal security, scalability, flexibility, resilience, and performance management with its advanced Software-Defined Data Center based on Nexenta
Santa Clara, CA and London, UK – 25 March 2015 - Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced that it has been chosen by Wirehive, a UK based digital hosting company, to meet its demand for a storage solution to support its public cloud offering. Wirehive required a solution that could perform at the highest level, while remaining cost effective and covering peak demands for critical customer requirements.
Wirehive is an expert and agile multi-platform digital hosting company that works exclusively with digital agencies and their clients. Wirehive has become a critical part of its clients’ brands. It serves as a managed hosting expert, building and managing customized hosting solutions with a superior level of support. The company provides public, private and hybrid cloud services to its clients through virtual dedicated servers running VMware.
Wirehive needed a solution that could support its public cloud offering. It needed to provide scalability and flexibility to deliver significant growth in services and handle sudden bursts of activity aligned with marketing campaigns. It’s existing solution was proving inadequate to the demands placed on it and incapable of keeping up with Wirehive’s growth plans.
Simon Green, Technical Director at Wirehive, came in contact with Nexenta through a reseller. Green was quickly convinced that NexentaStor was the right solution for the job after evaluating its underlying saleable architecture. “We were pretty much sold on the technology even before we saw the pricing. Pricing was an added bonus,” Green comments. “With the Nexenta solution you get all the features straight out of the box without having to pay more to unlock additional features.”
Wirehive opted for the NexentaStor High Availability (HA) Cluster based on Supermicro servers with 70 TB of capacity utilizing multiple redundancy levels of RAID protection and additional read cache provided by HGST (formerly sTec) SAS SSD combined with write cache vis the HGST ZeusRAM SAS SSD. By choosing the HA option, Wirehive can enjoy significant resilience and redundancy capabilities while managing and controlling the shared storage. “We have no intention of using anything else apart from NexentaStor. As far as we’re concerned it’s the best solution out there, commented Green.”
“Wirehive looked for resilience and flexibility for its public cloud offering and NexentaStor was the perfect fit for the job. Nexenta’s close integration with VMware was another key factor for Wirehive as NexentaStor provided the hosting company with a platform for critical virtual applications without affecting performance or reliability,” explained Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta. “NexentaStor also allows Wirehive to support tailored campaigns for customers and eradicated any concerns over its ability to handle short, sharp bursts.”

Leading European University and Research Institute Run on Nexenta Open Source-based Software Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Ruhr University Increases Storage Performance, Flexibility and Avoids Vendor Lock-in While Lowering TCO for Its Big Data and High Performance Computing (HPC) Platforms
Santa Clara, CA & Munich, Germany – March 18, 2015 -- Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS) today announced that the, Interdisciplinary Centre for Advanced Materials Simulation (ICAMS), a research institute at Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB), supports its research with NexentaStor. Located in the heart of Europe, Ruhr-University Bochum has over 5,600 employees, 41,000 students from over 130 countries, and focuses on the development of innovative scientific institutions like ICAMS.
Founded in 2008, ICAMS at RUB focuses on the development and application of a new generation of simulation tools for multi-scale materials modelling with the aim of reducing development cost and time for new materials. The center’s research on new materials via this interdisciplinary approach makes ICAMS globally unique. Within the approach taken by ICAMS, the different length scales that are relevant for materials – from the atomic structure to macroscopic properties of materials – are bridged by an interdisciplinary team of world-renowned scientists from engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
To support its research resulting from their High Performance Computing (HPC) system, the institution needed state of the art IT services via a Software Defined Data Center approach. An existing RAID legacy system that saved the results from the HPC calculations, struggled to cope with the workload as more students accessed the data. The institution needed a high performance, high capacity, flexible, open, and cost effective solution to replace it. It also required a partner that could guarantee support. ICAMS quickly saw Nexenta as the only solution in the market that could meet its needs. To test the benefits of Software-Defined Storage, the NexentaStor Community Edition was installed into an existing system. After a positive experience, the team decided to install NexentaStor Enterprise Edition to replace the existing standard RAID system.
As a public entity, the university is always looking for ways to save money but it still needed a reliable system that could handle the workload. Opting for a Software-Defined Storage approach, which avoids vendor lock-in, the institution can choose from any standard hardware provider. With the support from long standing HPC storage partner MEGWARE, the institution implemented NexentaStor on standard Surpermicro hardware. The system was easy to deploy and ready to use within a day. Offering data reduction and snapshots solved the institutions’ IT needs while staying on a budget.
Mr. Caesar, IT Administrator as ICAMS said: “We like that with Nexenta we were able to calculate the total cost for the entire lifespan of the system right from day one with the additional performance and capacity management capabilities. With other vendors it is extremely difficult to plan budgets after the initial three years due to hidden costs. Our experience was that cost for support quickly gets out of hand with legacy vendors. Since we are in the public sector we cannot plan for expensive services three years ahead. We like openness and flexibility in deploying Nexenta with no vendor lock-in.“
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta, commented: “ICAMS needed a high performance solution and a high level of partner support and we were pleased to be able to meet these demands. The major factor for ICAMS was the ability to avoid vendor lock-in and with NexentaStor we achieved this.”

Global Cloud Service Provider for Big Data Analytics in Oil and Gas Industry Runs on Nexenta Open Source-driven Software Defined Storage (OpenSDS)
Drillinginfo Helps Enterprises Make Better, Faster Decisions via Best Cost/Performance and Web Scale Infrastructure to Manage Massive Data Growth
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – March 12, 2015 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Open Source-driven Software-Defined Storage (OpenSDS), today announced the deployment of its platform for Drillinginfo, an Austin-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider of data-driven intelligence to the oil and gas industry. What began as a simple online permit and completion-mapping database in 1999, became one of the 500 fastest growing companies in the United States by 2008, according to Inc. Magazine, and has one of the largest oil and gas databases in the world. Drillinginfo delivers game-changing information for oil and gas energy exploration decision support, enabling companies to get to better insights, faster.
Prior to drilling for oil, companies must evaluate up to eight different silos of data to meet regulatory and compliance guidelines; the ultimate goal is to have the least amount of risk – and the greatest success in finding oil. Seismic and geological data provide analysis of rock structures, based on drilling location. Legal documents, such as county court records for leases, date back hundreds of years. The volume of data that oil companies must sift through is immense, growing each and every year, and becoming more and more complicated to access and analyze. Drillinginfo’s Chief Technology Officer, Mike Couvillion said, “When our storage architect, Andy Davis, approached me about the company’s growing data storage requirements, we discussed the need to implement a scalable platform that would support our current and future storage requirements.” Drillinginfo has roughly 900 terabytes (TB) of data, and adds roughly 20-25 TB of data per month.
Nexenta supports Drillinginfo’s rapid growth – while meeting the company’s budgeting, financial and planning requirements.
Drillinginfo turned to NexentaStor, Nexenta's flagship Software-Defined Storage (SDS) platform, as a replacement for its current storage system. “Our data storage team doesn’t have to worry about running out of storage as we add data and the systems are fully high availability (HA) – there isn't a single point of failure,” added Couvillion. As Couvillion’s team analyzes the financial benefit of using Nexenta, the most important metric is cost per terabyte. “Because the Nexenta system is so redundant, it can be put on Supermicro, which costs us about $416/TB. That is well below the industry average, and there is no additional licensing for replication. At that cost, the Nexenta SDS practically recovers its cost on delivery.”
“Drillinginfo is a perfect example of how Software-Defined Storage can eliminate performance and scalability challenges,” said Jill Orhun, VP of Marketing & Strategy at Nexenta. “The right decision on storage is instrumental to running effective infrastructure, and that has ramifications for companies’ bottom line. Nexenta is proud to assist Drillinginfo with managing and storing its large volume of business-critical data.”
