Leading European Energy Supplier Powers its Business with Nexenta Software-Defined Storage
Cost-effective and scalable unified storage solution boosts reliability and performance
Munich, Germany and Santa Clara, CA, USA, August 4th, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced that Stadtwerke Tuttlingen (SWT), a regional German energy supplier, has chosen Nexenta’s Software-Defined Storage solution to underpin its entire infrastructure.
Founded in 1896, SWT is responsible for providing electricity, gas, and water utilities to over 34,200 residents across 980 square miles in the South West area of Germany. Along with its responsibility for the power grid, SWT also supplies natural gas to private and business customers while managing two-thirds of Tuttlingen’s drinking water and urban drainage.
SWT was running multiple high performance databases (Oracle, MSSQL) but the existing storage solution was hampered by relatively bad optimisation. The system was only four years old but also incapable of supporting a planned VDI deployment.
After testing and evaluating a system that was recommended by Nexenta’s German premium partner Sievers Group, SWT opted for a 60TB NexentaStor license to underpin the entire SWT infrastructure at its headquarter’s data centre.
Meik Müller, IT Manager at SWT commented: “To keep our IT-system flexible enough to react with a rapidly evolving energy market, we were looking for a new storage system that offered high performance, flexibility and high availability. We already had experience with software-defined storage but it was when we met Nexenta that we knew we had the right solution.”
Using NexentaStor, SWT has significantly increased the performance of its storage environments while keeping its costs low. One of the key selling points for SWT was the simplicity of Nexenta: There was no need for complex licensing. NexentaStor features, such as, unlimited snapshots, thin provisioning and hybrid storage pooling, helped SWT to implement cost-effective storage with high performance.
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta said: “Our SDS solution cuts vendor lock-in, radically improves TCO and offers improved performance and scalability. Our solution helps companies like SWT avoid the MESS (Massive Expensive Storage Systems) and concentrate on growing and building their business – boosting productivity and customer service. It’s a win win for everyone.”

University of Sussex Graduates to Software-Defined Storage from Nexenta
University of Sussex Graduates to Software-Defined Storage from Nexenta
Nexenta Scores Top Marks for Flexibility, Scalability and Cost
London, UK and Santa Clara, CA, USA, July 31, 2014 – Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (SDS) (#softwaredefinedstorage) solutions, today announced that the University of Sussex, a world leading teaching and research institution, has selected NexentaStor™ to improve network performance and prepare for the future development of its diverse, flexible IT infrastructure.
The IT department at the University of Sussex provides support for the entire university – 13,000 students and over 2,100 staff – with a single home directory service that enables users to access files from whatever device and operating system they are using, wherever they are on the campus.
With the original solution approaching the end of its useful life, the IT department needed to explore new solutions. Working with NAS UK to replace its existing system, the university looked at a number of options including sticking with the incumbent supplier, or switching to other solutions, including Nexenta. After weighing up all the options, Nexenta was selected because of its flexibility, scalability and attractive economics.
James Goodlet, head of infrastructure services, IT services, University of Sussex, explains: “Nexenta was actually the most cost effective but that wasn’t why we chose it. We got a really good feel from the company, talked with them extensively and did a thorough evaluation with their support. They even sent developers on to the campus to talk through some of the issues we saw. We were very impressed with that level of support and feedback. It’s unusual to have such an open relationship with a vendor.”
Alongside NexentaStor, the university chose Dell R720 servers which NAS UK arranged with particular SAS HBA cards and solid state disks (SSDs) to support optimal integration. The resulting solution delivered the performance the university sought, and paved the way for sustainable expansion. Indeed, as a result of the stability, scalability and performance of Nexenta, the University of Sussex’s IT department is now looking to other campus storage systems and even further opportunities to consolidate, increase speed, and grow efficiently.
Mark Jordan, VP and GM, EMEA at Nexenta, comments: “The Nexenta implementation marks a milestone for the university and a move towards an industry- leading, best of breed Software Defined data enterprise that will support the campus, its students and staff now and for the future.”

C-Level Technology and Investor Software-Defined Storage Event to Take Place During VMworld 2014 US
Santa Clara, Calif. — July 2, 2014 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced that Hillary Rodham Clinton, Former Secretary of State and Former U.S. Senator from New York, will deliver the keynote address at Nexenta's OpenSDx Summit on Thursday, August 28, 2014 in San Francisco.
Coinciding with the last day of VMworld 2014, Nexenta’s OpenSDx Summit is an invitation-only event that convenes more than 400 CEOs, CIOs, investors and VIPs. Nexenta hosts this annual event to discuss the importance and advancement of software-defined technologies, and the impact that they have on organizations around the world as they embrace the Software-Defined Data Center. OpenSDx Summit will include industry expert panels and thought-provoking conversations around Big Data, the Internet of Things, mobility, social media, and other topics.
"We are thrilled to have Secretary Clinton deliver the keynote address at OpenSDx Summit," said Tarkan Maner, Chairman and CEO of Nexenta. "Now more than ever, the public and private sectors need to collaborate to provide technology that can drive innovation in the global economy. OpenSDx Summit will address the key technological and business issues that will become the backbone for doing business for the next five-ten years."
After nearly four decades of public service as an advocate for children and families, First Lady, Senator, and U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton now helps lead the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation. She is also the author of the new book, Hard Choices, which chronicles her efforts to restore America’s leadership after eight years in which it was badly eroded. From repairing our fraying alliances to negotiating a cease-fire in Gaza that defended Israel’s security and headed off another war in the Middle East, to mobilizing an international coalition to impose crippling sanctions against Iran, to standing up to China and helping reassert the United States as a Pacific power, thanks to Hillary’s leadership, people were finally able to say: America’s back. She championed human rights, internet freedom, religious freedom, and rights and opportunities for women and girls, LGBT people, and young people around the world, as she has her entire career. She also went to bat for American workers and companies around the world to boost exports, create jobs back home, and level the playing field against unfair competition from China and elsewhere. At the Clinton Foundation, Hillary continues her work on behalf of women and girls, in support of early childhood development, and to help young people get the skills they need to find good jobs and participate in the global economy. She remains committed to making the American Dream an American reality.

Nexenta Powers Leading Global Research Center in Neutron Science and Technology
Nexenta Powers Leading Global Research Center in Neutron Science and Technology
Software-Defined Storage underpins Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) user data and ensures business continuity
Paris, France, and Santa Clara, CA, USA, June 30, 2014 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced that the world renowned, Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), an international research facility, has deployed NexentaStor to support its rapid data growth and to ensure business continuity.
Funded and governed by France, Germany and the UK, in partnership with 12 countries, ILL is at the forefront of neutron science and technology. Every year 1500 researchers visit the centre in Grenoble, France and carry out more than 800 experiments.
With unpredicted increases in scientific research data and the organizations’ own data growth rates rising by 25% every year, ILL’s existing NetApp infrastructure constantly needed more capacity. However, it was becoming harder to manage the entire upgrade process and the cost was escalating. ILL decided to split its data in two. The scientific research data would remain on the incumbent solution and the growing amount of user data would be moved to a new platform. ILL was also looking to add high availability capabilities to protect against disasters and ensure business continuity for its users.
Following a recommendation from Dell, ILL turned to Nexenta for an SDS solution. Not only did NexentaStor offer high availability, unlimited snapshots and automatic failover, it was based on the open source file system ZFS which integrated perfectly with the ILL’s existing Solaris storage platform.
Stephane Armanet, System Administrator, Instiut Laue-Langevin comments: “Once we had decided on the Nexenta SDS solution, it only took five days to deploy it and migrate all of the user data. Once installed, the SDS solution simplified everything; reducing overhead, personnel costs, cut out risk and solved our business continuity challenges. NexentaStor has provided us with a strong technological foundation to build an ongoing scalable storage environment.”
Tarkan Maner, CEO, Nexenta, concludes: “The Nexenta SDS solution has allowed ILL to break out of the expensive and inflexible proprietary upgrade cycle which is forced on many enterprises by the massively expensive storage system (MESS) providers. It now has an award-winning, industry-leading storage solution to underpin its rapidly growing data centre, which will ensure its continued global expansion and success.”

Nexenta Software-Defined Storage Solutions Reduce Storage Management Times by Almost 90% for European Hosting Company
Nexenta Software-Defined Storage Solutions Reduce Storage Management Times by Almost 90% for European Hosting Company
Santa Clara, Calif. — June 26, 2014 — Nexenta (@Nexenta), the global leader in Software-Defined Storage (#softwaredefinedstorage) (SDS), today announced it has reduced storage management times at Rivebit by 87.5% whilst boosting capacity and performance.
Launched this year by IT and VMware specialist Roberto Bondavalli, Rivebit is a growing provider of virtualisation and consolidation, disaster recovery, cloud-based backup and cloud PBX services to SMEs in Northern Italy. With a focus on becoming the region’s leading Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud provider, Rivebit already manages its customers’ data across two sites and has plans to grow this footprint in the future.
Rivebit was looking for a storage solution that could provide the right capacity for its needs, combined with strong performance to support its cloud back up service. The storage solution also needed to preserve the stability of the infrastructure and be compatible with a number of horizontal applications including MySQL, Microsoft Exchange 2013 and VMware Horizon View.
After evaluating the market, Rivebit chose NexentaStor based on a Supermicro reference architecture. The solution was installed onsite by Nexenta channel partner, NT Nuove Technologie. Rivebit then managed the rest of the deployment. The solution underpins Rivebit’s VMware infrastructure across the two data centres ensuring that data can be rapidly backed up to the secondary site and restored, in the event of a failure.
“The biggest challenge was to source a storage solution that had big data capacity and good performance but with traditional platforms - this is very hard to find,” said Bondavalli. “Since implementing Nexenta we can easily add capacity without having to shut down and failing drives can be swapped without any downtime. NexentaStor is fast, stable and significantly cheaper than rival products. I used to spend four hours a week on storage management issues but this now eight times faster and start up time on our virtual machines has gone from over a minute down to just 15 seconds.”
Jill Orhun, VP of Marketing, Nexenta, said: “NexentaStor offers the ideal combination of enterprise functionality that Rivebit needs to support its infrastructure. Organisations are realising that SDS is the future of storage and we are delighted that cloud service providers like Rivebit are choosing Nexenta to cater to their storage needs. We pride ourselves on helping customers to move away from the Massively Expensive Storage Systems (MESS) provided by the proprietary vendors and work in partnership with our customers to make sure the solution they implement is the best fit for them.”
