Nexenta Systems Underpins Ballou Hosting Intelligence with 304TB of Enterprise Storage
OpenStorage solution provides 75% cost saving and halves time spent on storage management
London, UK — 21 May 2012 — Nexenta Systems, the world’s leading provider of OpenStorage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that rapidly growing managed services provider, Ballou, has implemented six NexentaStor systems to underpin its entire 304TB storage IT infrastructure. Nexenta’s OpenStorage provides enterprise class features including hybrid storage pooling, unlimited snapshots, deduplication, and thin provisioning but at a quarter of the price of other traditional storage vendors. Ballou will be presenting the benefits of Nexenta at the OpenStorage Summit EMEA 2012, on May 24th.
Founded in 1997, Ballou prides itself on being one of Sweden’s most reliable service providers. Managing terabytes of data for businesses, governments, and individuals, it offers flexible and customised managed services, such as server virtualisation, email, and Web hosting facilities. Some of Ballou’s key competitive differentiators are its popular customer support staff, a reputation for proven high availability, and its datacentre facilities.
With a newly upgraded VMware infrastructure, Ballou realised its aging IBM SAN was not providing the performance required and it was rapidly running out of space. Additionally, with Ballou looking to implement several large cloud-based projects in the near future, it needed a storage infrastructure with scalability, superior performance, and one that could manage increasing customer requirements. Ballou needed an agile, versatile, and flexible solution, which would provide enterprise features at a competitive price.
After carefully assessing a number of solutions, and with support from its channel partner Layer 8, Ballou implemented NexentaStor. Together with Layer 8, Ballou designed a solution based on NexentaStor and high performance ZeusRAM and ZeusIOPS from STEC. Almere, the Netherlands — 27 April 2012 — Nexenta Systems, the world’s leading provider of OpenStorage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that BAS Group, the largest electronics retailer and e-tailer in the Netherlands, has chosen Nexenta to replace its Open-E storage environment. The Dutch retailer, which owns Dynabyte, Dixons and MyCom, selected NexentaStor to significantly improve overall performance and minimise the risks of downtime to its storage systems.
After the acquisition of Dexcom, and the coinciding expansion in retail stores and employees, BAS Group needed to redesign its storage environment dramatically. To provide ‘clever integration of online and offline shopping’ to Dutch consumers, BAS Group migrated to two Nexenta HA (high availability) 10Gbps NFS connected clusters with a total capacity of 64TB.
With the Nexenta solution, the Dutch organisation increased I/O speeds for its SQL servers that update the retailer’s websites 24/7. It also has significantly improved customer interaction and data center performance. BAS Group uses NexentaStor’s management console to monitor its full storage environment, enable storage pooling and tiering, and migrate volume services.

TerraTel Saves Two Thirds of its Storage Budget with Nexenta’s Enterprise OpenStorage Solution
London, UK — 24 April, 2012 — Nexenta® Systems, the world’s leading provider of OpenStorage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that Web hosting provider, TerraTel, has chosen two NexentaStor SAN solutions to underpin its entire virtual infrastructure. This has led to the Swedish company saving two-thirds of its storage costs.
Established in 1994, TerraTel provides high quality Web hosting, email solutions, and backup services to hundreds of customers across Sweden, Scandinavia, and Europe. For TerraTel, managing and protecting its clients’ mission critical data is serious business. An integral part is ensuring guaranteed uptime, superior performance, and data protection.
After moving to a VMware infrastructure, it became apparent that the company’s existing storage infrastructure, which included a number of different SAN solutions, was unable to cope. The company required a consolidated, reliable enterprise storage solution to underpin its virtual environment but at the most competitive price.
After carefully evaluating several solutions, with the help of channel partner Layer 8, TerraTel selected NexentaStor. Mattias Palsson, CTO, TerraTel, explains: “NexentaStor offers great performance and is incredibly flexible. The biggest benefit for TerraTel is that we can implement enterprise class storage for a fraction of the cost of a legacy system. With Nexenta, we no longer have to choose between features or performance, we can effectively provide both and satisfy our clients’ needs when provisioning new virtual servers.”
NexentaStor, which is exclusively used for TerraTel’s VMware infrastructure, is built on enterprise hardware from Cisco, creating two SANs. Each uses 2U rack servers with 16 disks to create a combined total raw capacity of 12TB. Features include hybrid storage pooling, unlimited snapshots, deduplication, and thin provisioning.
Palsson concludes: “We estimate that by buying two Nexenta solutions, we have spent less than one third of the investment we could have made with one Oracle SAN unit. This cost saving provides TerraTel with additional capital, which can be used for other IT resources to ensure we are meeting all our service level agreements.”

- Nexenta has increased its contributions to OpenStack to support openness in cloud management.

Unprecedented European growth of 410 percent in 2011 generates industry recognition

It also was runner up in the ‘New Product of the Year’ category with its flagship OpenStorage platform NexentaStor 3.1.
Now in its fifth year, the awards, which are hosted by the UK’s Network Computing Magazine, were presented at a ceremony on 22nd March at Hotel Russell, London.The awards recognise the hardware, software, services, and the companies behind them, which have most impressed the readers of the UK’s longest established computer networking publication.
The win is a reflection of Nexenta’s continued successes. It recently announced that sales were up by 410 percent from 2010 and that it had grown its partner and employee numbers in Europe. It also added a slate of seasoned executives to its management ranks and strengthened its more than 4,000-member customer list
