Nexenta Releases Server Hypervisor Market Share Survey Results
London, UK — 11 September 2012 — Nexenta Systems, the world’s leading provider of OpenStorage solutions for the enterprise, today announced that Simply Mail Solutions (SMS), a leading email hosting company, has chosen a NexentaStor SAN solution to underpin its entire international email hosting business. Using Nexenta for its customers’ mailboxes, it has saved two thirds of its storage costs and cut its storage management time by as much as 90 percent.
Based in Warrington in the UK, SMS prides itself on providing innovative, reliable and cost effective email services to customers all over the world. Although email hosting is its core business, it also offers web and server hosting, enabling companies of any size to eliminate the hardware and administration costs of maintaining in-house solutions. To remain competitive, high availability and performance of its systems are crucial.
An increase in its customer base and a significant influx in the level of email and web traffic on a daily basis led to SMS exploring the best option for replacing its existing storage infrastructure. SMS needed a solution that was agile, reliable and could handle the IOPS requirements. Nexenta met all of these requirements at a lower cost than the current provider. With help from VA Technologies, a value added reseller of high performance servers, storage and workstations based in Bedfordshire, SMS selected a NexentaStor based SAN.
Myles Winstone, marketing manager at Simply Mail Solutions explains: “Nexenta’s OpenStorage software provides advanced caching and when it is coupled with SSDs it offers performance that far outstrips our current requirements, allowing us to stay ahead of our customers’ needs whilst still giving us the ability to easily scale up. It also offers enterprise class redundancy with replication capabilities including unlimited incremental snapshots and cloning.”
Central to SMS’ technical strategy, the NexentaStor SAN is dedicated to running MS Exchange Mailboxes and provides the company with 128 TB of raw capacity. In addition to unlimited snapshots, Nexenta’s OpenStorage solution provides enterprise class features including hybrid storage pooling, deduplication and thin provisioning.
Winstone concludes: “Nexenta has allowed us to upgrade the storage systems used for our critical business applications, at one third of the price of competing storage solutions. In addition it has heavily reduced the time spent on management, in some cases by as much as 90 percent, allowing us to provide an even more competitive solution to our customers in the future.”
Evan Powell, CEO of Nexenta says: “Nexenta is ideal for service providers facing increasing data growth and web traffic demands as it offers superior performance, flexibility and scalability at a low cost. An alternative to traditional legacy storage systems from big vendors, it helps service providers such as SMS meet client needs effectively and remain competitive in a tough economic climate.”

Raidundant and Nexenta Deliver 1,000,000 IOPS in New Appliance
Raidundant and Nexenta Deliver 1,000,000 IOPS in New Appliance
All-flash Unified Storage Sets Performance Records While Delivering OpenStorage Savings
Santa Clara – August 20, 2012 -- Nexenta Systems, a world leader in OpenStorage solutions, together with Raidundant, an emerging innovator of storage technologies providing ground-breaking solutions for the storage market, announced they achieved one million IOPS (Input/Output Operations per Second) by combining NexentaStor with SkySAN Storage.
With its new capabilities, Raidundant’s second-generation SkySAN Storage Appliances deliver even more compelling performance and cost savings for customers seeking speed and efficiency in a smaller footprint. SkySAN's all-flash array model—with its unique distributed backplane design―breaks the 1,000,000 IOPS barrier in a single box. SkySAN combines the industry's fastest array with the industry's fastest connection—40G Ethernet―all in a small footprint measuring in at 17.8 inches in depth and 3U in height, plus the unified storage and deep data integrity and protection capabilities of NexentaStor.
“Beyond the headline performance, this announcement confirms that the OpenStorage model allows for superior innovation, as well as massive cost savings,” said Evan Powell,
CEO of Nexenta. “Together, OpenStorage participants are pushing innovation at a pace that legacy vendors cannot maintain.”
Nexenta, Raidundant and STEC’s solution solves the Big Data problem enterprises face by offering one million IOPS in a single 3U box, which also will come to the rescue of other customers in need of massive performance in a small, power efficient and cost effective platform without sacrificing replication. No longer are real-time business analytics, high performance database applications, and real time GIS analysis the privilege for a select few; OpenStorage is making enterprise class storage for everyone a reality.
Raidundant is providing selected customers access to the all-flash SkySAN, which will be made generally available this fall. Interested parties can find more details at VMworld 2012 in San Francisco, from August 26 to 30, where Raidundant will be at booth #213 discussing the technical details and ZFS technology behind the one million IOPS performance.
“There is a lot of hype about flash storage; too often, the solution comes with an outsized price tag, limited functionality, and an unproven file system,” said Annie Parkhurst, director of sales and marketing, Raidundant. “With Raidundant's one million IOPS all-flash SkySAN, users will see the same extreme performance without severe damage to their budgets and without giving up the unified storage and data protection features of NexentaStor. SkySan, with NexentaStor, delivers more than two times the performance of other all-flash arrays at 75 percent or greater savings, while also delivering far superior data protection and unified storage. ”
Jim Ting, vice president of product marketing, STEC, Inc. (NYSE:STEC), added, “Combining STEC’s ZeusIOPS SSDs, Nexenta’s OpenStorage software and Raidundant’s innovative SkySAN provides the enterprise market with a high-performance storage solution at an overall lower total cost of ownership that vendors of legacy storage systems can’t match.”
The details of the one million IOPS results are as follows:
-
16 outstanding I/Os
-
100 percent random read requests
-
Four kilobyte I/O request

Nexenta Frees Vigilant from Legacy Storage Lock-In
Nexenta Frees Vigilant from Legacy Storage Lock-In
Nexenta’s Hardware-Agnostic Solution Cuts Storage Costs, Improves System Uptime and Eliminates Dependency on Legacy Vendor Systems
Santa Clara, CA — June 27, 2012 — Nexenta® Systems, the world leader in OpenStorage solutions, today announced that Vigilant, who counsels companies on employment issues throughout the Northwest and California, selected NexentaStor as its storage array and virtualization appliance. Nexenta partnered with Nordisk Systems, Inc., which provided hardware and professional services, to develop a system that reduced Vigilant’s storage costs, ensured backup of its critical data, and liberated the company from the locked-in business model of legacy storage vendors.
For more than 50 years, Vigilant (which previously operated under the name TOC), has been helping employers stay compliant and out of trouble. Vigilant’s staff of employment attorneys, along with safety, human resources, and benefits professionals, guide businesses from all sectors, both large and small, through the maze of employment issues, affirmative action plans, safety concerns, health plans, and workplace training.
Vigilant’s previous server system, which included SharePoint 1.0 deployed first on a Windows 2000 server and then WSS 3.0 since 2009, was stifling productivity and overall business success. The company’s servers were overheating, and renovating the cooling system was cost-prohibitive.
Vigilant’s new solution creates a server architecture with a modern 5U server and storage virtualization stack powered by VMware ESXi and NexentaStor. Nexenta’s solution virtualized the physical servers, thereby reducing room temperature, prolonging the server lifecycle, and increasing overall server and network reliability. The solution eliminated redundant backups, reduced downtime, and ensured that critical data would be protected and restored in the event of a hardware failure. Nexenta’s OpenStorage approach delivers high-level efficiencies while providing enterprise-class performance and manageability.
Triet Nguyen, senior network engineer, Vigilant, has stated that, “We were feeling the heat, both literally and figuratively, from our legacy storage system. Failures from overheating and age were causing downtime for staff and delays in customer response time. Nexenta was able to solve all these issues, easily and within budget.”
Said Evan Powell, CEO, Nexenta Systems: “Vigilant’s experience is a textbook case of why companies small and large are embracing OpenStorage. Legacy vendor lock-in forces dependence on costly and inconveniently timed hardware updates. When your company stays with these older systems, your business output suffers as a result. Nexenta empowered Vigilant to free itself from this model and, as a result, Vigilant is experiencing significant cost-savings and an increase in uptime as a result.”
This week, in collaboration with Vigilant, Nexenta will host a live webinar to discuss how Vigilant’s legacy storage architecture was transformed by Nexenta OpenStorage.

Public Sector Still Overwhelmingly Rejects Open Source Storage in Favour of Legacy Storage
Public Sector Still Overwhelmingly Rejects Open Source Storage in Favour of Legacy Storage
Government departments, locked into premium brands, spend, on average, £236,000 every year
London, U.K. — June 12, 2012 — A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request from Nexenta® Systems has revealed that just about every local and central government department across the UK remains locked into premium storage brands, such as IBM, NetApp, HP, HDS, and EMC.
This is despite the government’s well-publicised efforts over the past several years to cut costs across the board and create a more level playing field between open source and proprietary software vendors.
The FOIA request looked into the storage buying habits of 48 local and central government departments, with 44 responding to the request. Key findings include:
- Departments reported spending, on average, £236,004 each year on storage, with spending reaching as high as £1.8M.
- They are buying, on average, at least 101TB of storage every year.
- Each terabyte of storage typically is costing them around £2000, but some are spending close to £5000 per terabyte.
- Resellers still are pushing legacy, big-name, high-margin brands, such as IBM, NetApp, Hewlett Packard, Hitachi Data Systems, and EMC.
- Just one local council admits to using open source storage, and a paltry 100GBs worth at that.
With the award-winning NexentaStor, it is possible to utilize SSD technologies in a manner that is appropriate for each business. Some companies would like businesses to believe that an all-SSD approach is needed to achieve a high-performance infrastructure. With SSD pricing currently higher than the cost of traditional hard disks, this just isn't feasible for many businesses.
Evan Powell, CEO at Nexenta, believes that the public sector needs to radically rethink its storage buying strategy in the face of a worsening economic climate. He said: “It’s incredible to think just how much of British taxpayers’ money is being wasted on expensive storage solutions due to a combination of vendor lock-in and general apathy. And it is sadly ironic that open source based storage is growing massively faster outside of the UK government despite the government’s proclaimed preference for open solutions.”
Powell claims many of the world’s leading storage buyers now rely on open source based storage, including some of the largest financial, telecommunications, and government organisations around the world. He cites KT (Korea Telecom), the U.S. Army, Cisco, and VMware as just a few examples where open source storage from Nexenta has helped cut costs by up to 80 percent, saving hundreds of millions of dollars that otherwise would be spent buying proprietary storage brands, while delivering the improved flexibility and innovation that is the hallmark of open approaches.
Powell believes that once open source storage starts to be adopted by the UK government, those resellers that cling to selling legacy brands will face a rude awakening. “Resellers need to have an open source storage strategy or risk being quickly shut out of deals. What’s more, resellers that make the investment in providing more savings and flexibility to the government will find those investments paying off.”
Ryan Tyler, Technical Sales, VA Technologies, concurs. “The public sector urgently needs help from IT partners who have the necessary skills and tools with open source storage to make the necessary transition as soon as possible. Government departments are faced with the rapid growth in data and are required to store it for increasingly longer periods. The rapidly growing cost of maintaining and expanding on their legacy storage systems is proving too expensive, a fact that the government needs to quickly wake up to.”
Powell concludes that research confirms that the UK government’s open standards policy initiative has yet to make real progress and suggests several reasons why they are not making the leap. He sums it up as a combination of issues, “Confusion, apathy, and fear, and the challenge of finding an IT partner with the necessary skills to roll out open source storage are part of the problem. In these austere times, if the government wants this initiative to work, it needs to begin by educating not only the public sector itself but also the service providers that cater to this sector.”

Nexenta and EraStor Delivers All-STEC SSD Array with Record-Setting Price / Performance
Nexenta and EraStor Delivers All-STEC SSD Array with Record-Setting Price / Performance
OpenStorage Leader and reseller partner EraStor Unveils New Appliance at OpenStorage Summit EMEA 2012
Amsterdam — May 24, 2012 — Nexenta® Systems, a world leader in OpenStorage solutions, along with EraStor, a new European-wide provider delivering Nexenta certified solutions, today announced at OpenStorage Summit EMEA 2012 that it has achieved a record-setting level of storage performance with NexentaStor and STEC solid-state drives (SSDs). The EraStor 25S all-SSD appliance Powered by NexentaStor uses 24 STEC SSDs and can achieve 253,469 sustained write IOPS at low latency.
“We believe that our mission to provide enterprise-class storage extends to delivering high- performance SSD-based solutions,” said Evan Powell, Nexenta CEO. “This result shows that striking a balance between high performance and low cost is not only possible, but readily achievable by all types and sizes of customers by using best-of-class SSDs. STEC, a Nexenta- certified solutions provider, delivers products that are a great foundation to any storage system.”
“The EraStor 25S all-SSD appliance generates huge gains of over 250,000 write IOPS sustaining 2.8GBps throughput with less than 2ms of latency. The EraStor 25S all-SSD appliance is a real leap forward in providing extreme performance while being cost effective for our customers’ infrastructure needs.” said Ryan Tyler, VA Technologies CEO, an EraStor Partner.
The EraStor 25S all-SSD appliance is available today and supported by key partners within the EraStor alliance. The EraStor 25S starts from 4.5TB raw capacity and scales up to 17.6TB (raw capacity) of pure performance storage in a single high-density 2U appliance.
NexentaStor is the only solution available on the market today that allows customers:
- The choice of underlying hardware free from the lock-in proprietary business models of legacy vendors;
- The ability to unify SSD, disk and hybrid use cases that combine SSDs and disks via one scalable system; and
- The management of all leading storage protocols via one system, including FC, NFS, iSCSI, CIFS and objects for cloud use cases.
Nexenta's approach allows customers to use as many SSDs as they need and can afford. This flexibility will allow them to increase their usage of SSDs as the pricing gap narrows between SSDs and HDDs, and SSDs become more affordable.
By managing all workloads within a single high-availability (HA) and scale-out solution, and providing choices in the underlying hardware, Nexenta saves businesses time and money.
A second benchmark, using STEC SSDs with a larger system, is currently in process at Nexenta and is expected to exceed a nearly double sustained write IOPS performance at low latency. Nexenta intends to participate not only in the area of all-SSD performance, but in providing customers with the means and freedom of choice to introduce SSD technology into their systems at an affordable pace.

Nexenta Debuts NexentaVSA for View to Solve Complexity of Deploying VDI
OpenStorage Leader Unveils Solution at the Nexenta OpenStorage Summit EMEA 2012
Amsterdam — May 22, 2012 — Nexenta® Systems, a world leader in OpenStorage solutions, today at the start of its OpenStorage Summit EMEA, announced the official release of NexentaVSA for View, a breakthrough solution that expands Nexenta’s proven ZFS-based storage software into virtualized desktop environments. A result of Nexenta’s strategic partnership with VMware, NexentaVSA for View simplifies the process of configuring and deploying virtual desktops -- dramatically reducing the storage and management costs that hinder VDI adoption.
The product will be generally available for download in early June. For more information, see: nexenta.com/vsa4view.
NexentaVSA for View simplifies management of virtual desktops and VDI environments – turning a process that normally takes 150 pain-staking steps into a quick four-step process. Using the ZFS file system with commodity hardware, enterprises can save up to 80 percent on the management and storage costs associated with VDI. In the last three months, a number of organizations have participated in the beta program of NexentaVSA View, including Clark College. Initial results include upto 10X improvement in the time taken to deploy new virtual Windows desktops.
“When implemented properly, desktop virtualization can yield savings in management costs and staff efficiencies associated with deploying a large number of machines to end-users,” said Patrick Taylor, network systems manager, Clark College. “We tested NexentaVSA for View and found that the implementation was relatively simple. Clark College appreciated the detailed analytics and benchmarking Nexenta provided, which enabled us to easily monitor and make adjustments to our VDI environment after deployment.”
Boasting more than 4,500 commercial deployments, Nexenta’s OpenStorage software is an ideal approach for breaking down the barriers that have prevented wide-scale enterprise adoption of VDI. The key benefits of NexentaVSA for View include:
- Fast VDI Provisioning, Configuration and Tuning: NexentaVSA for View includes a user interface that guides administrators through VDI deployment, benchmarking, calibration and reconfiguration.
- Automated and Intelligent Configuration: NexentaVSA for View enables out-of-the-box VDI deployments and automates the processes of configuring and rebalancing the Desktop Infrastructure.
- Performance Visibility: Built-in benchmarks measure end-to-end performance, from the client endpoint through storage devices.
- Calibration and Analytics: NexentaVSA for View automatically modifies configurations based on specified criteria, reducing administrative input.
- Low-Cost, Performance-Optimized VDI: Nexenta VSA for View simplifies deployment of commodity storage as Hybrid Storage Pools, which caching that accelerates write-sensitive VDI performance.
“Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) minimizes the headaches associated with desktop upgrades, security patches and software provisioning,” said Valdis Filks, research director for storage technologies and strategies, Gartner Research. “Systems and processes that allow enterprises to better implement and manage VDI will further accelerate adoption and allow IT managers to demonstrate the value of this powerful technology.”
In a Nexenta survey of 208 IT managers (conducted on a VMware online vForum and through Storage Newsletter), nearly half (44.4 percent) of all respondents indicated they were currently using or piloting VDI. This survey also covered VDI’s barriers to adoption. 75 respondents (36.1 percent), for example, said VDI was too complex to deploy; 40 individuals (19.2 percent) said VDI costs were prohibitive and 25 people (12 percent) said VDI was too difficult to manage and scale.
“We’re proud to be a key VMware partner simplifying the implementation and reducing the cost of adopting virtualized desktop environments,” said Evan Powell, CEO of Nexenta. “NexentaVSA for View helps IT break through the bottleneck of deploying virtualized machines quickly and easily, ultimately improving end-user productivity and accelerating VDI’s return on investment. NexentaVSA for View takes the complexity and guesswork out of implementing this powerful technology.”
The solution officially launched at Nexenta’s OpenStorage Summit EMEA, in Amsterdam. Running from 22-24 May at the Mercure Hotel, Amsterdam, the event is aimed at IT directors, storage administrators, storage architects and storage and virtualisation resellers looking for low-cost, high performance solutions to solve the complex storage issues in the virtualization, VDI and cloud environments.
