With the explosion of data, and the requirements to collect and maintain this data, companies, in recent years, have required intelligent storage devices targeted at backup and recovery. And many storage technology companies have responded with an array of devices aimed at specifically this issue.

These devices or plug-ins include advanced capabilities, such as deduplication, replication, snapshots and clones, and writing directly to tape. The challenge has been to coordinate these activities with backup and recovery software. Symantec OST (which stands for OpenStorage Technology) allows NetBackup Media servers to take advantage of intelligent disk devices, as well as cloud storage solutions. Storage vendors, working in tandem with Symantec, can use the OST Software Developers Kit to create plug-ins that more tightly integrate their devices with NetBackup. The OST plug-ins are provided either directly from Symantec or from the storage manufacturer and installed on NetBackup Media Servers.

The Nexenta OST Plug-in enables a NetBackup Master server to specify a duplication process and delegate execution of it to the Nexenta Storage server.

This has many advantages:

  • The NetBackup Master server retains control of creating and duplicating backup images. It also keeps track of all copies in its catalog, which ensures easy and efficient recovery.
  • The Nexenta Storage server uses its highly efficient remote copy process to transfer the images from one to an other.
  • The optimized duplication removes the NetBackup Media server from the process of creating duplicates of backup images, which reduces the load.
